Went to change the points and rotor arm in the series and when I tried to adjust the points, noticed I could twist the central shaft loads, a good 25 degrees. I guess this is not good. New dizzy needed or will an electronic points conversation solve it. Was going to get one of those anyway as I've done it in the past on another classic
Cheers

In which case it's probably absolutely fine. Under the plate that carries the points is an arrangement with weights that fly out against a spring to alter the timing with revs. You also have the vacuum advance/retard - a rod that comes into the distributor body from a diaphragm in the round thing on the side if the distributor, which connect to the plate and moves it too. The play that you don't want is side-to-side, because that plays havoc with the timing.

Cheers mate, I don't think there's any side to side play, I didn't notice any anyway..... it's running fine, since I adjusted points, so I'm not going in the dizzy cap again! I'm going to check the timing if it ever stops raining, then I'm shutting the bonnet till Xmas!

Timing done. Runs well, just need to increase the revs, it's got a Weber carb and the linkage won't adjust any more, it's idling about 550 rpm!
