DIY storage drawer for 110

So I was keen on the idea of a rear storage area for my 110. Right up until I saw the price! Gulp.
Figured I would knock one up instead.
It's probably been done a million times before, but figured I would post some pics in case it gave anyone else considering similar some ideas...
Basically 18mm and 12mm ply, some cheepo carpet, a bit of everyone's favourite chequer plate, a paddle lockable door handle, and some seriously sturdy drawer runners...
Wanted it to be lockable, and due to large hound being at a higher level added a dog cage. Also had to add some further handles post installation because paddle handle isn't great for pulling drawer open if it is crammed with stuff.
Not the world's most professional job, but does the trick and beats stuff rolling round the back waiting to be nicked...

I like what you've done there.
In fact that is on my to do list, but mine will be half the depth full opening being just within the body, I shall also split it to have 2 drawers.
I am using the same runners as you, got mine a year ago from screwfix I think, could have been B & Q.
Good runners, I have a pull out unit in our kitchen that I made using 3 pair, supports a fair old weight, and been opened god knows how many times since I made it 8 or 9 years ago.

Nice one. I want to do something very similar on my D2, but doubt I will be able to make something as professional looking as that. I would also be grateful for the details on your draw sliders. Could you also use them as sliders for a fridge?

Nice job, you could make kits and sell them to those less woodworking talents. Or sell the plans(dimensions/specs etc) so people can buy exactly what they need.

Easily strong enough to mount a fridge or most things overlandy I reckon - the limiting factor load wise is definitely the drawer not the runners.
I didn't draw up plans as such - just made it up as I went. One tip though - an 18mm ply sheet cut the width of the rear space and the length of the space behind the seats cannot be fitted in no matter how you wangle it (first pic)! If you are going to bridge that space you need to cut a narrower piece and add infills (second pic).
The box section you need so that the drawer clears the rear door when open rather neatly fits the jack if you have an original farm style one (accessed from middle seat footwell in mine, though you could leave the back open for easier access).

You are right - the thing you can see on the far right of this pic is an extendable ramp which can sit on the step by the drawer and means that he can potter up...

Nice one! Are you going for a drawer at the back and then a storage bin behind it, or will that just be a space you can access from the middle seats?
I'm sure you have it in mind but don't forget the right hand side has to be offset so that the drawer will clear the rear door hinge when it opens...

I will be making a draw when the rails arrive. The right hand side needs an offset like i saw in your pics. The left could probably do with another 5mm offset or so but i will see. There will be a storage bin behind the draw that will open from the top but i'm undecided whether to have it on hinges or not

I went for the two drawer option as I wasn’t convinced ply wouldn’t deflect after time and jam the drawer.
It also means the top can be split down the centre for easier ingress. Oh and one drawer is shorter than the other in mine so I could fit a secondary battery behind it.
These things come in very handy and I’m happy I fitted it.

I had the same concern, although the base is 12mm ply and is rebated in to all four walls of the drawer, and there is no noticeable movement at all even when heavily loaded. I bought some aluminium angle to reinforce the drawer base if it moved too much - if over time it starts to sag I can retrofit the angle.
Two drawers is a big benefit in terms of organising storage - my drawer is very big so unless it is fully loaded things can slide around. At some point I will probably add a divider and some foam cutouts to take valuable stuff that I don't want to roll about. In the end though I wanted to avoid the extra weight and complication of two drawers.
I would very much like to fit a spare battery though. I am hoping to do that in the space under the middle seats, but will have to have a look and a think about the space available.
