good afternoon,

I am trying to get a Discovery 2 td5 started. I am purchasing it from a friend. It has been dry stored for over 2 years and prior to being stood up she ran perfectly. She's on 168k but ran like a dream.

We tried to start her the other day and she cranked well but would not fire. We noticed two things:-
1. when turning on the ignition the glow plug light did not come on

2. the fuel pumps were not priming.

My friend bridged the contacts and got the fuel pumps working but she still would not start, there wasn't even a hint of coughing etc, she just cranked and cranked but no go.

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Ben

if the pump doesnt run on it's own it's useless to direct power it but at least we know it works, first of all push the inertia switch on the bulkhead and if no joy unplug it and bridge the pins in the plug...if still no pump activity we'll speak then, also measure the battery voltage while cranking if it drops below 10V it will not start but crank well as the starter draws all the power and not enough leftbfor the management to open the injectors then put powerfull battery

Switch on, then pump throttle pedal 4 or 5 times until the engine management light starts to flash

This is the fuel priming procedure, take 5 mins or so, you might have to do it twice

Also, make sure battery is in top shape, as if voltage is dropping, she'll crank but not fire, i think the injectors need 10.8 volts befor ethey will open

Right update. Tried the inertia switch and also tried starting her with a battery off his other td5 used as a daily.

Still no glow plug light, cranks but no fuel pump priming etc.. Just cranks and cranks but no signs of starting etc not even a splutter?

you are keep saying the pump is not "priming" do you mean it doesnt run at all when you turn ignition on?...or the pump is running but no fuel at the rail?

check fuses F1, F10, F13 engine bay and swap relays R9(main) with R8(heated screen) and R2(pump) with R3(headlamp wash) to rule out the main and pump relays though better would be to put new relays there after such long "rest", the main relay is the most suspect cos it gives the feed for the pump relay and glow plug relay too... did you unplug and bridged the connector of the inertia switch or just pushed the button?

if you are handy with electrics, you have a multimeter and RAVE i'll tell you what meaurements to make cos there's a missing feed somewhere

Okay, I will try that.

It would make sense that the main relay that supplies the feed for the fuel pump and glow plug could be the culprit...

Fingers crossed, I'll be in touch tomorrow..

Ben ;-)

no, i just have a fetish to suggest silly things to fellow d2 owners :( ... i've already told you in post #2 here... if you are not reading carefully what i'm saying i'm just gonna leave you be... at such kind of fault everything must be ruled out 100%, especially if the car's been rusting in peace for 2 years, you can't rely on any connection too much, so i'm up to help just concentrate a bit m8

Apologies there. I am up to speed but sometimes will ask a silly question to ensure I'm not overlooking something simple. I will have looked at her again after work later today and will confirm the findings of swapping around the fuses etc. I really appreciate the advice you are giving as it definitely is helping me rule out issues and narrow down where the fault lies.

Cheers, Ben

Success, you were on the money, the main relay was the culprit, fitted a new one and she fired straight up. Really appreciate the advice , it was invaluable.. I'll put up a welcome thread as well just to introduce myself in more detail and fire up some pictures of her.

Again many thanks, Ben
