Discovery smokes and apparently gets hot

Ok but that will only adjust off-boost fueling, seeing as its smoking on boost its probably the diaphragm that needs turning back a bit and if you are not sure what you are doing its best not to as it entails taking the top of the pump off

edit sorry just reread your post, you are talking about the main fuel screw right? this ussually has a seal on it anyway

Was lead to believe the screw I mentioned was the one that adjusted the max fuel that'll go in when at full boost (like pulling a trailer uphill in 3rd) which is what made me think that's probably the one to alter slightly (also guessing the cover/collar thingy would've been removed if it had been tweeked). I thought the diaphragm and the screw under the cover were more related to fueling at part or no boost? (correct me if I'm wrong, we're all here to learn).

On the other hand, reading the last couple of posts I'd agree it's probably more wear than anything, pump timing may be worth a look if the owner feels capable enough -as mine smoked a bit when I went a bit too mad trying to get mine spot on

Wouldn't you have over heating problems all the time if the 'stat was at fault?

I'm no expert on adjusting the fip, but all the advice I have seen is about rotating the star wheel and the diaphragm before you start doing the bits you suggested.
Could the stat be faulty, opening at the wrong temp, rather than stuck shut?
I know when I had a problem with over heating (radiator blocked up) it only did it when pulling the caravan uphill, was fine the rest of the time. As I went up a hill the needle climbed, luckily I got to the top and or slowed down enough before it got in to red, but it was close sometimes. As soon as I was over the brow of the hill it would go down again fairly quickly
