I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now... but its on hold as its fffffffffgfooking ffffffreezing out atm lol. You need some special tracks!! They grip oh so much better than most!
 
OK so this evening a bit of a story unfolds, which was somewhat expected......

A while back I replaced the rear diff and pinion assembly as the inn pinion bearing gave up the ghost. At that time I looked at the front diff and noticed that the play in the pinion bearing was also more than standard.

So tonight I was driving along and noticed that the steering was getting stiffer to operate just off from centre. When stood still, the steering was absolutely fine so the problem was only when the car was traveling.

Also I was noticing that there was a low rumble noticeable when just about to stop, say 5-10 mph.

Upon inspection I found that there was oil leaking from the nose of the pinion carrier and leaking down the diff guard.

SO THE CONCLUSION

Well my guess is that there is a lot of play in the pinion due to the bearings going and this is binding in the crown wheel as drive is put through the axle. As I turn, the differential is not letting the wheels rotate independently and so the steering is going stiff. A bit like a locked diff.

What are your thoughts dear readers?

My plan is to replace the diff as soon as the new bearings for the spare diff have arrived. At the same time I will regrease the wheel bearings and replace the oil seals as a precaution whilst also looking at the swivel housings too.

Looks like a busy few days ahead PLUS I am upholstering the Lotus 7s dashboard. Busy busy busy
 
I have a lot of play in the pinion bearings, much the same as with the rear before that blew.

The rumble I suspect is this movement but also maybe the UJs

TBH there are so many things that can vibrate and rumble its a wonder we ever get them running spot on lol.

My plan is to unbolt the swivels from the axle and pull out the half shafts to swop out the diff. This strikes me as the quickest way and was the way my mate did his. Any thoughts?

Yep unbolting the swivels is best, don't even have to disconnect the brake pipes!

I rest the hubs on 25ltr oil drums normally, just the right size and nice and soft so they hold the hub well.

Then diff out and inspect!

You are also quite right in your estimation that it is almost impossible to get these cars 100%.

It sure would be nice to win the lottery, quit work, buy a BIG heated workshop and start stripping down the land rover, passivating every part as it came off and rebuilding every component, replacing every bush etc.

You know, a full restoration!

That way it MIGHT just drive alright for a few months!
 
I think you would be lucky to get a few months out if it.

Yeah I have thourght of it, but we are very posh around here and I already take the position of the cul-de-sac pikey lol.

Seriously I have but don't want to took out of the living room window at the old girl under a sheet. I'm a snob....

Although it may have to happen as a last resort

Remove living room window, fit garage door in its place and Shapow! A garage and a nice 7 seater coach to double up as a living room ;)
 
It was a great idea and he snuck in as I was typing lol

When I was single I used to have three motorbikes in the kitchen. To be fair it was a huge kitchen and I still had room to do the cooking.

French door meant I could just ride in and out.
 
S as the rain stopped play on the disco I wanted to make sure I did someone productive so I recovered the Lotus 7s dashboard.

Yeah it was a charmed life. The garden was just a large lawn so no gardening needed, a large workshop in the garden meant I could work on my bikes and being single meant I could do what ever I wanted when I wanted, oh how I miss those days.lol
