Absolutely legendary mate. It's just so fresh!

Hornet > Range Rover gave me lols.

The hornet is nearly monster truck status :D

Yes you will always find the rear axle articulates more than the front.

This is because of the ball joint in the centre, if one wheel goes up the other one gets pushed down and vice versa.

The front is more independent so if the body is wherever, the front springs balance the axle out so it's more likely to stay level.

If you get into a proper axle twister like this:

then you will get full articulation.

If you only pop one wheel up and leave the other on the flat, you will find the back axle does all the work. That is why you fit 5" dampers on the rear but only need 2" on the front to counter the spring lift.

Glad to see you're out flexing it and trying it out anyway, onwards and upwards.

Looks mega mate, huge huge props to you :)

Basically if someone hits the rear end, I want to be left with nothing more than a scratch and half of their car attached lol.

Gawd every time I stop at the lights I'm just wishing someone runs up my arse. I'd accept a four wheel drive, but a hatchback would be preferable. HGVs and Buses are exempt!

I get your drift.

Thanks for the encouragement Sam. You are a huge inspiration to anyone who wants to build something properly and learn why things should be the way they are.

Now that I have seen that everything is ok and sorted, I think it's time to get it dirty. I will just be careful until I get the bumpers sorted.

Bumpers are your protection, so yeah don't get seriously offroad until your sorted.

Laning is a great way to shakedown. Believe me you will find lots of things that need tightening or adjusting!!

hi mate
yea, deffo make the rear bumper v strong.
me and matt both bent our rear bumpers up today at the new thames valley 4x4 site at reading,to the extent where neither of our boot doors would open lol,but hey someone had to test the new ramps/holes etc.so when are we off to waterlane then mister hornet
looking really good mate,v impressed.lets get it dirty :D

Cheers Gratch. I am getting the bump stops from Gwynn Lewis. They are very reasonable and he has given some good advice so I would like to pass business his way if possible. That's also where I am mgetting the trailing arms from too.

Andyjd,

I will be posting photos of the bumper build as its done. Shouldn't be too long. I plan on having the main supports in 50x50 with the bumper itself being made from 60x100 RHS which is slipped over. The wrap around quarter panel protectors will be braced from the chassis. I am also hoping to add a spare wheel carrier that swings away so the door isn't taking the extra weight of an oversize wheel. Should be good.

Mate of mine lifted his disco with Gwynn Lewis kit, said he was a good bloke who knows his stuff and would recommend him. It looked quality tackle as well.

Sorry to hear about that mate. Bet you had fun though.

I have tacked up the first support frame for the bumper and will fully weld it this week and then order the remaining steel on Thursday ready for pick up on Friday night.

Will take it out this week to work the suspension and then do a final tightening check before letting loose.

Waterline as soon as I get the snorkel. Challenge should have them in stock. I really fancy a south downs one as its neater.

Looks like he had an interesting time with that ditch. Are they still together lol.

Problem is as he climbs the bank on the nearside, the front which is rigid and has less articulation than the rear, automatically lifts the offside losing him traction. Diff lock would help and give the transmission an easier time.

Did he like the new tyres over the Kumhos?

That was with diff lock mate, the problem is that the bank on the ns tyre was stoping me from getting the amoun of turn I needed so was climbing the bank ,although the red bobtail that went through before me almost put it on it's side but he had air lockers etc ( propper bit of kit) so that's another thing to go on the list along with a hd rear bumper lol

Oh btw what do I owe you for the pads matey??

Oh and as for the tyres hate them on the road, but they are better than the kumhos off road,
as this is all mines used for they were defernatley the right choice for me!
Don't get me wrong the kumhos are an awesome tyre both on and off road tho and would have no problem recommending them to someone wanting a good off road tyre that is still good on road!

Airlockers are on my list too. As for the rear bumper you will have to look at mine when its done.

Glad you like the tyres and no charge for the pads, if we cant help each other out then why are we mates BIG SMILEY FACE lol

so tonight i spent another hour or so on the rear bumper. i have completed the main cross member support which attaches to the chassis. Over this I will put the main RHS section which will form the shape of the bumper as well as give it the extra, you can try to bend me but you will fail, strength.

In the middle of the bumper there will be a class III hitch as well as detachable towbar beneath. Finally i am looking at incorporating some powerful lights to aid in reversing and working behind the vehicle.
