I have got a 1997 discovery 2.5 tdi, will accept geras but will not drive, sounds like a problem with the transfer box, is there any problems that many be causing it, gear rod linkerage come loose ect, also if I do have to swop the transfer box what problems will I encounter. thanks

Get an assistant to check underneath (or select the gears) and see if one of the prop shafts is spinning when in gear with the engine running (wheels chocked, foot on brake as a precaution).

If one of the props is spinning then this indicates a drive problem in that axle, otherwise it is a transfer box problem.

The propshaft frrom the transfer box to the front axle starts to rotate but knocks and fails to drive, the propshaft to the rear axle does nothing, tries to change gear ratio but no different, I beleive either the transfer box is faulty internally or the selector to the transfer box is faulty.

i was thinking - if he tries to drive, but goes nowhere then drive has to be broken somewhere. if any of the props still turn, then surely the prob has to be in the associated axle? if the front tries to turn then doesnt, doesnt that show that the tbox is trying to drive the front which still is connected to the ground, but the rear, if it still turns, is getting all the Tbox drive, but is loosing drive somewhere between the rear of the rear prop and the wheels?
If neither prop turns then the prob has to be in gearbox or TBox. I thought a common prob was intermediate drive between Gbox and Tbox?

is this right, Andy, or am I talking bollix again?

pop the cover plate off the back of the transfer box, put it in gear and see what happens. if the centre is turning (the output shaft from the gearbox) but the gear isn't then the splines have stripped and you need another gearbox and transfer input gear.

if the front prop is turning when in gear, then suspect either a broken half shaft or knackered cv joint.

do you have drive with the diff lock on?

@MHM, yes to all you say. I wasn't reading the posts closely enough.

I also agree with "quattro" above; that is an easy check as well.

Remember to chock wheels and/or have someone sat in the drivers seat ready to use the brakes! :)

Hi, have got the car on axle stands, prop to front axle is turning when put in both forward and reverse gear and clutch up but no drive at front wheels, rear prop is not turning at all, have tried changing the gear ratio no difference, I would think that there is two problems.

1. The front axle has no drive, possible half shaft broken.

2. The transfer box is giving no drive to rear prop, cause unkown.

I thought the disco discovery like all other 4x4's are permament 4 wheelsdrive therfore if the front prop is turning then the rear prop should turn as well.

If the front prop turns but no drive to front wheels then the prob has to be in that axle - halfshaft or diff.
No - yu dont have locked drive front and rear unless it is in difflock. That is because the Tbox is basically another diff and drive will be sent to the path of least resistance ( the front).
To prove this, remove front prop, put it in difflock and see if it will still move.

heres a update:

Have got all four wheels off floor, turn the rear wheels and the rear propshaft turns ok, turn either of the front wheels and the front propshaft does not turn.

Which would you recommend, remove plate front front diff and see if all is enganged and turning ok, or take out halfshafts, suggestions welcomed.

Deffo problem on front axle then. providing when you turn one front wheel, the other doesnt turn in the opposite direction. Bearing in mind you need to remove halfshafts to remove diff, try the halfshafts first. You mite be lucky. Or you may only remove half a drive shaft, in which case you know which one is broken ;) (if only one).

Have had a look at the rave disc I just bought, lists a whole load of specialist tools, are these recommended or can the half shafts be removed without them

Yes permanent 4 wheel drive, but there is a centre differential. Therefore with all wheels of ground, drive would take easiest route, in this case the front axle, as it sounds to me like you have something broken in the front axle, so you're only turning the shafts. All you would need to stop the rear shaft turning would be the resistance of your handbrake, which is on the rear prop shaft. Repeat tests with the diff lock engaged. If the rear shaft does not turn with diff lock engaged, then you almost certainly have transfer box problems.

When the car would not move I then tried to drive in 4 wheel low, including locking the diff by moving the small gear selector into the centre, hard across to the left and then in both the forward towards the engine position and towards the rear of the car position but no drive in any.
As I said in previous post, all four wheel off ground, turn rear wheels by hand and the rear prop turns, turn either of the front wheels and they spin freely but do not turn the front prop or other wheel.
I always thought a fourwheel drive car was that it permently drove in all four wheels.

HANG ON THERE!!!!
when the fook did yu say yu had tried it in difflock?:rolleyes:
We have been suggesting yu try it in difflock and yu aint said a bloody thing!

and NO - a 4wd car dont DRIVE all four wheels - it drives both axles. - unless yu can lock the diffs in each axle. The difflock only locks the centre (Tbox) Diff to ensure that drive is to both axles. If yu loose traction on one wheel, there is no drive to the other wheel on the same axle - if yu loose traction on one wheel oneach axle - yu dont go anywhere.

ffs!

Obviously my second message on this thread were I said I had tried all gear ratio's was not clear enough, therefor I will recorrect,
I tried it in 4 wheel high,
4 wheel low,
dif lock high
dif lock low
all fully engaged and the car would not drive.
when in 4 wheel high the front prop was turning but the car would not move.
Raised all 4 wheels off ground so the car was sitting on four axle stands and the wheels clear of ground, retried all again as above, result no drive.
Turned rear wheels by hand, result both wheels rotate and rear prop shaft rotates up to transfer box.
turned front wheels by hand, result other front wheel does nothing and the front prop does not turn, repeated same exercise with other front wheel with same result of no front prop turning and no opposit front wheel turning either.
Conclusion
there is a fault on the front axle either half shafts or diff.
The transfer box must also have a fault on it as well as mentioned in the above thread if diff lock is engaged then the car should have still driven but did not.
Have I got this correct?

Have stripped down the offside (drivers) hub, found half shaft ok but the CVJ shatered into a hundred particals.
Looked down inside the axle and the nearside wheels halfshaft is turning ok.
I bought this discovery from an auction approx 1 mth ago and obviously been lacking maintenance as there was no oil in the swivel joint at all and only approx 1lt in the whole front axle.
