Hi all,

Just wondering whether alloy rims from a Discovery 1 will fit our Ninety.
I assume they will, the reason I ask though is to check that they will not have any problems with clearance with the drum brakes at the back.

Cheers.

Great thanks. I've finally found some for sale for a decent price. I've been looking for either some alloys or Defender steel wheels to replace the wheels on our Ninety. It has those white steel aftermarket rims fitted from when we bought it and I would rather some Land Rover wheels as the white rims just don't look right.

The good thing was that when we bought it, it came with Goodyear Wrangler tyres on it, which seem to be a great off road tyre, so that was a bt of a bonus despite the rims.

Just to clarify for those of you who are really perceptive, my avatar is not our Ninety, I just grabbed it off Google images as it is a very similar colour scheme to ours. We don't have alloys like the ones in the picture. :D

disco freestyle alloys on the front you minght have fun with as i tryed some when i had my original 90 axles on and they catch on the axle end bolts the 5 17mm headed bolts and you have to remover the centre cap on the alloy so the end fits through. but also been told you need to grind a little bit off the inner of the alloy so they fit over the drive flange

I had that problem on my 1985 110, freestyle alloys fitted ok on the rear drums (with centre cap off) but on the front the drive member and bolts seemed too big and made it too tight a fit, you have to grind some metal off the inside of the alloys. Had the same issue with my RRC chassis on my lightweight.

Test fitted an alloy front and rear this morning. It seemed to fit fine. They aren't Freestyle alloys though, they're a bit different. Not sure what the style is called, but I think they are quite a good looking shape. :)

I did of course have to remove the centre caps. But that is not a big deal.

Mine fit with no problems, front and rear disc.
No grinding and the center caps were not removed.

That is most likely because of the fact that yours is a Tdi, while mine is older, a 1986 Ninety. There seems to be some difference in the hubs/hub caps between the Defenders and the pre-Defender Nineties.

Great looking truck by the way.:)

They're called 'Castor' alloys mate, from a late 300tdi Disco :)

Yours has the later type rear drive flange, like a flat dome shape one, its the earlier defender ones that cause the problem, because the drive flange bolts catch on the alloys

Hi - Sorry for the late contact on your old thread, but if you would be kind enough to cast your mind back...

I have just purchased the same wheels as you did, and have an 89 model 90 - Did you use spacers in the end?

Best Regards from Down Under

I've seen these for sale... think they are called Cyclone, and were fitted to Discovery 1's

My query is, will they fit my 2001 TD5 90?

Anyone got a piccy of these on a Defender?

.... and I have trawled through gallery, and searched... so I thought I'd at least keep all the alloy wheel stuff together for future searchers.

I absolutely love the look of this. I have just got my first 90 and it has a set of castors on it... Could you tell me your set up on this defender?
- lift?
- spacers?
- tyre sizes?

Many thanks for your help :)

Cheers mate :D It has standard height HD suspension which is approx +1" lift. It's got 30mm spacers and 265/75R16 Cooper Discoverer STT tyres :)

Here's a few more up-to-date picture though :D

I apologise for not updating this thread.

I had thought that the alloy wheels fitted, but when I went to fully tighten the wheel nuts I found that they dit not sit all the way on at the front of the vehicle. They would only have required a small amount of grinding, but as you can see from my profile picture I decided to go for steel wheels instead. I definitely didn't want spacers as I don't like the look and they put extra stress on the wheel bearings.
I had an old set of tubeless style steel rims and I got them sandblasted, zinc-arc sprayed and painted black and I have been very happy with them.

Evidently, old Ninetys and One Tens are not suitable for alloys (unless you do a bit of grinding), but Defenders are fine.
