What I'm selling
This is a 1994 M reg Discovery in Champagne Silver with MOT & Tax until the end of July, fitted with a Safety Devices roof rack (worth £500 pounds if you can get your hands on one) and a Land Rover cycle rack (worth £250 and rarer than the roof rack) that is hinged allowing you full access to the boot without the need to remove the bikes first, see pics. Also fitted is a strong tow bar with working electronics and I'm sure that's worth a few pounds too.
It has a working engine and turbo
The engine, gearbox and transfer box work as they should with no noticeable loss of oil (but it does drip on the drive), the car pulls well and the turbo works as it should. Looking on eBay an engine and gear box as spares sell for between £600 and £750. I get around 30mpg from the car so not too bad in the present economic climate.
Body work has aged but new rear boot floor fitted
This is a Land Rover and it's body work reflects this so whilst there is no major body work damage there are plenty of light branch scratches and a few scuff marks, none of them down to the metal though and from a distance and under a layer of grime can't be seen. This is not a Chelsea tractor and whilst not used for heavy off roading it has been used properly.
Most Landy's of this age suffer from a rotten boot floor but you will be pleased to know that I've had a new one professionally fitted (costing the best part of £1500) in the summer of 2010, one of the previous owners had bodged the floor to pass the MOT, so you can be sure that the floor will outlast the rest of the vehicle.
Both sun roofs work properly, the blinds are in perfect order and don't leak (a common fault) however the Safari windows could do with some attention as if the wind is in the right direction when it's raining water will come in.
The car has seven seats however only 6 have been fitted and this allows retention of one of the storage bins in the boot. The car will come with the 7th seat but there is a bolt missing, lost in transit when I purchased them from eBay, so don't offer 6 friends a lift as one will be left sat on the drive or rolling around in the boot.
It’s been serviced yearly
At the last MOT/service I had the rear shocks replaced, the steering damper, drop link bushes and the steering pump re-sealed. The year before I had a new radiator fitted (the engine didn't overheat so the head gasket is fine and the head not warped) that cools the engine really well. Over the last 5 years that I've owned the car I've ensured that all work required has been done regardless of cost and entrusted to VBRC in Swindon (fantastic family run garage and body repair centre). Before I purchased the car in 2007 (approx 70K miles ago) the cam belt was changed.
The car is fitted with mud and snow tyres suitable for all year round driving, it's not a race car so fitting sports tyres would not only look stupid buy they wouldn’t make the car go any faster and they really don't work very well in snow or the sticky stuff. They have loads of tread left and won't need replacing for a few years yet and this includes the spare wheel. On the subject of wheels the car has its original hydraulic jack under the bonnet and the actuator rod is present under the rear seat. The wheel chock is also present under the bonnet.
ICE, ICE, Baby
For your driving pleasure a Kenwood stereo with 6cd multi-changer has been fitted. Playing through the 4 speakers the stereo boasts features such as a Mini Disk control, the ability to name CD tracks and a tape cassette player. State of the art (in the 90’s) audio at its best.
Things you should know
This car is nearly 20 years old and so it does have a few issues that you may want to sort out before the next MOT. At speed, 60mph plus, hitting potholes or uneven road surfaces can cause a bit of a shake and whilst an in car massage is a nice thought it's probably a good idea to get it sorted. I've had most of the bushes replaced so likely causes are a worn wheel bearing or the steering pre-tension settings need adjusting. Too tight and the bearings will suffer from accelerated wear, too loose and the drive becomes somewhat interesting. Also weeping is the steering pump and whilst it doesn't lose a lot of fluid it is leaking and your MOT tester may not like that. Finally there is a little rust on the wheel arch behind the rear doors and on the steel bumper, as far as I’m aware it's not an MOT failure but you may want to have it looked at.
The mileage is somewhere between 125K miles and 245K miles, possibly more, possibly less. The reason for this is that I replaced the speedo with a 2nd hand unit from eBay that added over 100K miles overnight and due to the ease of changing the unit there is no reason why someone hasn't done this before I bought the car. I've lost the little piece of paper that I wrote the mileage down on when I swapped the units hence my reluctance to be any more accurate. The important fact is that the car passes its emissions test every MOT without issue.
Parts are worth more than the asking price
In summary this car on sale for less than the sum of all it's parts, the roof rack, bike rack, engine and transmission are worth around £1400 alone so even if the cars fails it's MOT in July you shouldn't lose any money. I would sell all the parts separately but I enjoy being married and my wife want's the drive back.
