Hi all ,
Got a question , is there a problem with torque converters on disco 3 s , Im looking to buy one but a mate says stay away from autos as the torque converter usually jacks in at about 120000 mile .
Any advice would be great .
Cheers Tony.

hi and welcome

i done a buyers guide which i hope may give u some insight

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/buyers-guide.312800/

what kind of money are u looking at if u don’t mind me asking

plse feel free to ask any questions , ref autos , indeed like everything things fail , same as a manual , most important thing is ensuring the correct grade of ATF oil is used and replaced at the correct intervals , along with belts etc

ZF gearboxes are very good , read many going well past 150,000 miles on the same torque converter , but again all about maintenance

if i may also add if ur not familiar with them best to take someone with u who has the experience or getting it fully inspected by the rac /aa

there are plenty of myths out there, saying the body has to come off for timing belts , all rubbish

hope that helps a little

ps , that link will take u into the discovery section

Mate has a Discovery 3, not heard him mention the Torque convertor. I know he had the gearbox serviced when he bought it as a preventative measure.
He's not a million miles away from you and I believe he has a diagnostic reader specific to the Disco3.

indeed a good call, wonder if many have never been checked when it says sealed for life in the owners manual

main issues i’ve heard of , is the ATF oil not being changed or wrong grade, know dexron shouldn’t ever be used with these boxes

think it’s every 60,000 miles for the ATF to be changed , many been changing filters but when they’ve cut them open are spotless

just been looking out of curiosity what an average life of a manual clutch is, indeed difficult according to use and driving habits, but averaging out 70-80,000 miles
