Hi i was wondering if anyone has experienced this noise in a td5 discovery 2 before. Noise can only be heard when doing above 50-60 mph. It will come and go randomly sometimes louder sometimes quieter. The noise can also be heard from outside the car. Ive checked a few things and also had it to the local landy guy but still no joy :( i

Upload it on youtube, not everyone does faceache.

Your original post linked it to a private facebook account.

Does the noise alter in pitch with the revs?

Is your phone connected via the aux lead and on charge?
yeah ive changed the original post now :) so in the video im going at a constant speed (sorry about my friend asking for a tissue he'd just fallen off his bike) and the pitch is changing. Then the noise will go completely and not be heard for miles then randomly return. my phone wasn't charging but i have turned off the radio completely and the noise is still there and ive also turn off the air con with no joy.

No but the noise can be heard by passing cars, not sure if the D2 has a "smart" alternator that has a clutch that disengages just like the 307 has, the cutting in and out could be the clutch cutting in and out?
i might pinch my friends alternator off his d2 and see if i can get it to repeat the sound. round town its sweet as a nut can't hear anything its just when you go a bit quicker.
thanks for the reply :)

OK, so I was wrong about the little fan, no it won't be heard by other cars on the motorway.

The D2 alternator doesn't have any sort of "smart clutch", it's direct drive. However the Td5 alternator does have a vacuum pump on the front to provide the vacuum for the brake servo.

Can you replace that vacuum pump fairly cheap?
It’s the sort of high pitch noise a pump could make isn’t it

Dismounting the vacuum pump from the alternator is fairly easy once the alternator has been removed from the vehicle.

Judging by your recent posts, I'd say that you're just guessing at what might be the problem. My advice would be to take the acoustic cover off the engine, start it up and listen to what might be causing any noises.

You can listen to bearings with a long screwdriver between the location of the suspect part and your ear, like a listening stick. If you want to go posh, you can get a mechanics stethoscope.

Beware of moving parts such as the fan when running the engine with the covers removed.
