I have a Discovery 2, 2004 model, owned from new and only 79,000 miles on the clock. Last week my daughter brought my attention to a fairly quiet creaking noise when turning the steering wheel at slow speeds. The noise is not audible inside the vehicle unless the drivers side window is fully open. There are no clunks or knocking sounds when driving and nothing feels strange. I once had a VW beetle and when the steering damper failed you were quite aware of the problem due to kick back in the steering. There is nothing like this with the Disco and it drives just like it has done for years and there were no problems noted during the MOT last September, apart from one worn drag link ball joint which I promptly had replaced, including the other ball joint end to be on the safe side. I bought a genuine Land Rover part from Rimmer Brothers. All the other ball joints were deemed to be fine by the inspector. Here, where I live in Slovenia, the vehicle inspections are carried out at an official government inspection centre, not a garage authorised to carry out checks. The place is geared up to deal with everything from cars to trucks in the one shed. You can go down into the inspection pit with one of the guys doing the checks and he will point out any problems plus you can ask questions. It is a real one stop shop because you pay the road tax at the same time as an all inclusive cost.
