Hello,

I live just outside Bristol and have a 2004 Discovery 2 it's the second one we have owned. The previous one was an excellent workhorse and we ran it for nearly 8 years before chassis rust forced us to give it up. We found a replacement at a reasonable cost and have been running it since April of this year. Recently on a couple of occasions, it stopped responding to the remote fob and we couldn't get the doors to unlock (except with the key). The battery in the fob was good and if we left the car for a few minutes it would start responding again. Then last week I parked in Bristol and was unable to lock the car or restart the engine. I was taking mum into the hospital so left the car unlocked and returned a couple of hours later. I was still unable to start the car until I placed the fob right next to the location of the remote antenna in front of the rear sunroof and hey presto it worked! So thinking that it was probably an issue with the remote antenna I replaced it with one that I had stripped out of the previous car prior to scrapping it. I noticed that the lug through which the bolt fixes the antenna was quite tarnished so wondered if a bad earth connection might be the cause of the problem? I made sure that the lug on the replacement was nice and shiny and when I fitted it the problem seemed to be fixed. Then this evening I went to open the car and once again no response! I needed to get some tools out of the car so opened it with the key, opened the bonnet, and disconnected the battery. About 30 minutes later I reconnected the battery and you guessed it the fob works again! Can't trust it now, but at a bit of a loss as to what to try next? Has anyone experienced anything similar? Or can anyone suggest to me what the problem could be? Thank you (apologies for the long description).

I have similar problems sometimes, .... two things to be aware of, even with a good battery the key isn't always 'sending' ... make sure the red LED is lighting up when you press the key. I think keys suffer from dry joints sometimes in the circuit board which can make them temperamental.
The other thing which is common enough in the town with that age of vehicle is that where you are parking has a strong RF interference, which blindfolds the receiver,
sometimes that can be overcome by getting as close as possible to it as you have discovered.
I have an old Nanocom which helps a lot, spare keys from scrap vehicles can be coded into the BCU (then swap your own blade into the fob), it also tells you if a key signal is being received. There used to be a Nanocom network on here, if there still is maybe check if anyone is in your neighbourhood?
