My discovery 2 headlights have stopped working in main beam when you click the switch the main beam comes on till you let go of the switch then they go out so do the dipped beam lights then if you click the switch again the dipped beam comes back on so think it is a relay but I dont know where the head light relay is. Can anyone help?

That sounds more like the actual lighting switch on the steering column to me.

i dunno how it's on others but on the D2 is not about "burning" the stalk but the internal plastic bits and the contacts are wearing out, which would happen with a relay too;)...as long as are not used stronger bulbs that stalk is ok IMO no need to complicate things with relay

on the D1 and possibly the D2, the contacts arc every time the switch is operated due to the current going through the switch. high resistances (common on D1s) exacerbate this. A relay limits the current through the switch to mA and thereby extends the life of the stalk.

i know the theory with arcs and can't argue with that... though my stalk is still the original after 14 years, it made tricks on me once so opened it and saw how the plastics were worn but the silver contacts were still in good shape, i bent the slides a bit and gave a layer of special strong varnish on the worn plastic parts, lubed it a bit and up it went... though next time when it goes wrong i'll buy a new one
