Disco 2 Discovery 2 fuel leak (Drivers side of fuel tank) - Only when running

Hi so I could do with some advice I have a 2003 discovery 2 Td5 and I have noticed I have a bad leak from the drivers side of the fuel tank that leaks down the chassis.

This only happens when the engine is running, I checked the fuel filter and this is rather dry so I don’t think that it is leaking from that but don’t know where it could be coming from.

Check the connection of the GREEN fuel line at the top/back of the tank (access hatch under boot carpet. Well known for coming loose and ****ing diesel out when pump running.

Thank you I will check that I had to replace the pump when I bought it a year ago.

Mine was from the fuel pipe rubbing against something between the tank and body, well known issue I believe.

It'll be the green pipe on top of the tank. Rubs against the loom.

Can be bought on its own, fairly easy to replace.

I think this is what's just happened to mine.... I can see a fine mist of fuel coming down from the above the crossmember that sits in front of the tank.
Is the green pipe the one that connects to the pipe going forward to the engine? Where is that joint?

Yes. The joint is by the body mount just in front of the crossmember on the (UK) driver's side

Thanks, I'll take a look.
I noticed Island 4x4 do the set of four and just the green one on its own, so it sounds like that's the usual culprit, as you said. Mind you, they way my luck goes, it'll be one of the others!

I wouldn't think it was something you could do much with at the roadside - or do you mean having a spare in the garage?

Any idea if the Britpart one is OK, or best avoided?

Replacing just the green pipe is pretty straight forward, it can be done at the roadside.

The LR instructions mention dropping the tank but it's completely unnecessary. It can be done lying under the car without too much faff with the tank in place.

I'm not sure even Britpart could do a bad job of some standard fuel line with a connector on each end.

Well I managed to get the pipe off - eventually! That’s a sod of a job, at least on my car. It looks like it’s been done before, as I found this joint by the cross member:-

The joint to the pipe running forward was hard up against the body mount bracket, so I couldn’t get the fuel line pliers on to the clips. I managed to get some slack by releasing the clip holding the pipes to the chassis rail (for ‘release’ read ‘broke’…). Then I could get a few mm more pulled through to get on to it and release the pipe.

Pipe unclipped from the pump OK, but the next hurdle was getting the pipe back through and out, as it got caught half way. I realised the green clip was the problem so fed it back and took that off. Came out OK after that.

Found a couple of nice rub marks on it, the upper one was the culprit, but the lower one wasn’t far behind it. It did have a bit of hose wrapped around it, but this had been slit lengthwise and seems to have rotated to the point where it wasn’t doing its job.

New pipe is on order, hopefully replacement is less of a struggle than removal!

New 'green' pipe arrived yesterday so put it on this evening after work. The new pipe came with a flat sheet of plastic with an adhesive strip along one edge, which I presumed was to wrap around the pipe to protect it. So I did. I put a few cable ties over it too, just in case the glue came unstuck.
So it all went back together a lot quicker than it came off. I ran the pump until it went quite and then it started first time, no leaks that I could see.
Thanks for the help all, only downer during replacement was that I didn't realise until too late that the bit of old carpet I using under the car had become a spong overnight and I was lying in a very wet patch!
