do you think that is worth doing sierra??.would it not be better to buy a re con and at least he will get a guarantee with it.

your choice m8... the fact is that some diodes are shot in the rectifier and they cause the drain... what ever you do , do it asap cos the non-rectified AC component in the delivered current might disturb some ECUs

Thank you very much,I plan to take out the unit first and have read your posting on this SIerrafery,I assume when I disconnect the pipes they will be empty of fluids etc.sorry if this is a daft question.
I saw on one posting mention of brake fluid loss and could not understand this unless its from the bolt connection to the unit.
I plan to buy the 2 copper washers and get a fan spanner and tool to lock my pulley,it looks very tight to remove bolts and was amazed somebody did it in 25 mins.
I read on your link from the e bay company to take off the unit and check the slip ring.
So will do this,not sure what it is,I called a main stealer who wanted £534.00 for a new unit,Halfords were £356.00,then looked at e bay and saw wide price differences and some warnings online about Chinese copies which fail quickly.i thought if I bought one from Paddock or similar I would get a good one as they seem to sell a Denso unit which is in my manual as a possible original fit tent.
I will get on it when I finish work and update you.

no brake fluid there...that's the vacuum pump attached to the alternator and those pipes are for oil recirculation from the cylinder head to lubricate the pump

Nearly 1.5 amps is a quite a lot of drain current. Try setting up your ammeter in series with the main battery terminal and removing the fuses one at a time and noting any change. I have heard that the rectifier / voltage regulator part in the alternator can cause a drain in some circumstances. This might tie in with the dealers suggestion that the charge current was too low. A good auto electrical shop can rebuild your alternator at reasonable cost, shop around locally.

Just an update,I have been delayed with this due to illness.but am half way through the dismantle bit.having trouble getting a small hose off on the right side.looks a strange type of clip,not a jubilee or type you squeeze together. It's got o protrusions just a couple of holes and small ridges.
Thought destroy it and replace with jubilee.
