DISCOVERY 1 OBD OR NOT OBD?? and REPLACEMENT KEY??

Hi all, apologies if this has already been discussed many times but I can't seem to find anything. After some search I found a 1990 V8 Discovery 1 and it is coming with only one key. Looking on the net at what to do to find a second one there is confusing information about having to program a key fob using 'diagnostic tool' and other information indicating that there is no OBD, which on that age of car I would have thought is correct.
What is correct? And anyone got a good source where I can get a replacement key/fob?

Well 1990 V8 thats a classic if it’s one of the first EFI D1.
What ever the age of D1s they just have a standard key that can be copied at most shoe repair shops.
As the vehicle has central locking with a remote fob but the alarm wasn’t a standard when it left the factory, and option fitted by the main dealer, and from VIN KA it was factory fitted if your vehicle has a Land Rover alarm system fitted then it was obsolete long ago.

As there isn’t an issue with an additional key, so may better now to fit an updated security system, central locking, alarm and immobiliser and reusing the existing wiring.
Remote central locking/alarm control frequency would 418 MHz, vin KA - LA and 433 MHz latter in the UK

As the for onboard diagnostic it didn’t exist back 1990.

Many thanks for your reply and that great information. It's actually a carb fuelled factory V8. Regarding the VIN references you kindly supplied are these the two letters in front of the individual chassis number? In which case mine is GA which puts it quite a bit earlier I expect
 
Based on discool's reply which i trust IMO your fob should be the single button AMR3720 and for this one the programming procedure is as follows:

Tech Tip - Remote Programming - Single Button​

Applies To:​

Discovery I | '89 -'94
Range Rover Classic | '87-'95

Note: Must be carried out in 8 seconds to access learn mode. Best done with two people. You should have both remotes available or second one will not work.

  • Open hood and have assistant hold hood alarm switch down.
  • From inside car, with all doors closed, ignition off and all lock buttons up.
  • Turn ignition on then off.
  • Cycle drivers door button down then up.
  • Assistant now releases hood switch.
  • Turn ignition on then off.
  • If done correctly, horn will beep once and dash LED will light up. This indicates the learn mode has been accessed. If this doesn't happen repeat 1 through 6.
  • From inside car, push and hold first remote. The dash LED should flash 8 cycles a second for one second indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat steps 1 through 6 again.
  • Push and hold the second remote, if the code is received the dash LED will flash 8 cycles indicating that the code was received. If this does not happen repeat 1 through 8 again.
Note: Turning the ignition on at any time will cancel the learning process. The system can only store two remote codes and must be done at the same time. If you only have one remote program it twice.

Ok GA 1990 and so one of the first then, 3 door models were on sale around September 1989 with the 1990 model year, with the 200tdi or 3.5 with carbs. non electric windows, steel wheels plus the blue upholstery.
It was rumoured that the 3.5 carb V8 was surplus RR stock.

Definitely a dealer fit option for the alarm, so locate the alarm ecu for the part number, as it may be a later item thats fitted with a different frequency, a year made a big difference with the disco back then.


I remember having a look and sitting in one in the LR showroom back then and salesmen came up and gave me his selling chat, then ask “are you interest in this“ nope i’m just hanging around to collect my Range Rover thats in for service, “so you won’t be interested will you“ nope.
He was still working at the LR dealer when I went to get my disco in 1997

Can you still set and unset the alarm system via the drivers door lock ?
My 1987 3.5 RR had central locking but not remote, also didn’t have alarm system until I fitted both after a few years.

Thanks for the further information, I actually haven't got the vehicle yet – should be collecting it this coming week so will get a good chance to inspect it then regarding what it has and has not got. Again many thanks

Ok, look for as they may have added by a previous owner of the vehicle the blue bag that was fitted at the rear of the centre console and the roller blind covering the boot.
Both were added a year or so latter from the 1990MY disco and are now collectors items, sometimes found on eBay.
