Hi i have just bought a 300 tdi disco and have started to modify it for off roading/green lanning .I have just bought one of these steering guards from MM 4X4

1-piece-steering-guard-with-10mm-re.jpg

The trouble is i cant get it to fit ,the front lugs are to short to conect to the chassis where the front bumper fixes on, has any one else had this problem . MM say it is deffinately the one for a disco 1

Thanks Martin

Dont understand how, I fitted one and it went on ok. Had to drill out the bolt holes in the chassis tho the standard bumper bolts are a bit too flimsey so fitted big bastids.

Also they dont really help the steering a lot since the rear section is still exposed and I have done it in several times, the worst when I bashed the damper and it locked the steering in a wooded area. You need to convert to defender steering to make it work.

ok mate thanks, when you lift it up it runs along the chassis rails ok but the front fixing lugs dont come up high enough to line up with the holes in the chassis where the bumper ataches. Are there better ones on the market that cover the steering better as this one is goin back

correct me if im wrong ..... but the chassis is level from rear bumper mount to front bumper mount for the front bumper? and the holes in the steering guard are level? so what is stopping it fitting? the front bumper will be in the way, either remove the plastic reg plate holder or cut it out. other than that there is nothing to stop the guard fitting

Mine's similar ... and fitted easily with a small persuader ... :)

I dunno about that, mine's now bent, but the steering tubes etc are fine ... ;) Picture doesn't show it well, but it's straightened out as best I can, by running the Disco over it and back a few times!!

Same as anything 'it depends' I guess. In this case it depends on how you hit whatever you're going to hit!! ;)

Mine does the same job, however been trying to get through ditches??, as you come out the rear part of the steering is exposed and gets whacked, and since the damper is bigger than the rod it gets it furst, the bastid. To be honest I would have been better with the damper off coz I had to take it off to get back out, the steering was jammed solid.

Perhaps its **** driving tho, but the defender arrangment is what I was told to go for, dunt know what it looks like yet but been using it without a damper at the minute until I make up my mind what to do.

It doesnt come any where near the plastic peice that the reg plate is on i have cut the lower valence off so its not touchin that, it fits on the rear mountings ok, runs nice and tight along the chassis its just the holes in the front fixing lugs dont line up with the holes in the chassis that hold the bumper on they just arnt tall enough :( shall i just re drill the chassis so they do  if you look at the picture they provide an elongated hole in the front lugs that gives movement forwards and backwards this should surely be the other way to give up and down movement then it would probably fit perfect as i would be able to get the bolts through :)

take some pictures to show us why it wont fit, or how you manages to mess it up :D

:D i cant explain it any clearer than my last post mate i dont think pics will help, i have been modifying vehicles for the last 25 years i just like to buy parts that fit or told that modifications might be necessary :D i can feel the sthill saw coming out ;)
