hi

Due to an expanding family , i need a new vehicle.i have wanted a 4x4 for ages but the missus always said that they were impracticle. Now she is warming towards them as i pointed out the increase in space necessary for all the nippers things as we travel around.

I really fancy a disco but keep hearing about rusty bits and dodgy reliability.

Are the rumours true or is it just scare-mongering by non land rover lovers?

Any help to keep the missus on side would be appreciated

Depends on how much you're looking to spend? I just picked up a series 1 (1996) V8 ES model Disco for £5K. I will spend another £1300 to convert it to run dual fuel (LPG (@ 38p per litre) and petrol), which will mean that it will be cheaper to run than a diesel version. The ES has all the toys; leather, aircon, electric everything! There is some rust in spots, all superficial though as long as I keep on top of it. Only complaint so far is a little oil round the outside of the sump, but then a landrover without oily bits is a new landrover!!!

Landys are great cars, and a lot of fun to own and drive, but do take your time to learn as much as you can about the vehicle before you buy. I recomend you start with the Haynes book 'You and your discovery' and the Haynes service manual, along with the forums on this site. Once you've bought one be prepared, its a bug that lasts for life!!!

Enjoy,

Chris

I have had my disco 300 tdi 96 for 4 years now and its great i have 3 kids plus WIFE, we can go camping or abroad and im always amased how much stuff she can pack into the boot so were the taxi drivers in malta last year we had to have 2 cars to get to the hotel, parts are pretty cheap all over, they are not all rusty some are looked after and mine has been really reliable, yes i do work on my own car but in 4 years i have only replaced centre/rear exhaust box and tyres,i also find it hard to go back to driving a car now as they are to low down and i feel vunerable in them due to a couple of non fault accidents,i would pick a 300 tdi and run it on veggie oil cheaper to run than a petrol but not as much fun, best looking 1 has got to be the XS with half leather trim dosent look so bland as the ES interior, sorry ES owners but we are all entilted to our own opinions, any way once you get one you will want another just like me,
