Well, it was all going so well. Working out spring rates, big tyres, heavy duty bumpers - all the mods, and then she broke down. Just lost power and then stopped dead. Attention has to change from stuff I want to stuff I need!

Wandered up to the local garage, found out they don't do call outs, called the AA from there. Bloke fannied about - checked cut off switch, looked at fuse for fuel pump, checked fuel relay, pulled fuel lines off the filter, checked for fuel delivery (none), so overall, looks like a knackered fuel pump. No buzzing either when ign turned on.

Is this common? Searched the forum, looks like there are a few threads on it? Have we (me and the AA man) been checking the right things? The garage has it now (the AA towed me there), but if there are pointers I should be giving them, any help would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Ben

Hi, if you turn on the ignition then pump the throttle 5 times it puts the fuel pump into "prime" mode and it should make a noticable whine, if it doesn't then I'd say it was the pump. :)

Was the pump getting 'noisy' before the breakdown ?
Some tend I think to get noisy before failing .
Would be worth checking that there is actually a 12V supply at the pump - in case of a broken wire /bad connection .

Pricey too - mine lasted almost 8 years (and around 150,000 miles) before it went...

Apparentlty the non-LR ones are flakey, so recommendation is to use a kosher LR one

ta both, for latest replies. Good tip on the gennie LR one. Will make sure of that. The relay seems OK - seems to click convincingly and so on. Car is on a W (2000) and has done 126K, so that seems to match yours, MartinK

While we had our rear carpet out to dry, we cut across the front of the slots for the rear row of seats, leaving a 3-sided flap that can easily be lifted to get at the pump, without needing to take the main trim etc out. Just undo the seat slot trims and off you go.

We have a rubber mat over the top so the flap never gets caught up in anything.

That's a good idea. You haven't got a pic of that, have you? Or has anyone got dimensions from some datum points to highlight where I'd need to cut?

Well, it's deffo the pump. Got a garage to scan it, which said it wasn't the pump, but working out where the fuel pump is (somewhere towards the passenger side), giving the fuel tank a bit of a clout gets it going again, but turn off a few mins later and nothing doing. Have ordered genuine pump as per advice - last thing I need is this happening again - it's going to be a pain the ar5e to change as it is.
