Disco problems-a pain in the a*** like mother in law

I am a newbie to the forum trying to enjoy my retirement from Banking and wanting to drive my Disco, something I have always wanted and enables me to pursue my hobby of archaeological excavations.Sadly it is becoming my worst nightmare and a serious drain on my pension. One problem gets fixed and two more appear by return. It is a 1999 Disco series 2 TD5 automatic and soon after I purchased it the three amigos appeared - now fixed. 6 months later the front offside ABS sensor packed up requiring a new hub. Cruise control, whilst fiitted, did not work as it was not reading the speed to activate. Fault was traced to the multiplug at the back of the bulkhead and this is electronic on diesel apparently. Next day it failed again and fault traced to a broken wire in the same location. Guess what, it failed again and is now going back to the garage to be overwired !!!!!!! Whilst waiting for this to be done the speedo now has an intermittent fault - is there any connection ??????? Now today the ACE warning light is showing amber. I do not want to get rid of this as it had been working brilliantly. I have trawled through the forum but lost the will to live when I saw so many problems especially with series 2. Is there anyone out there who would like a challenge to sort my disco without it requiring mortgaging the house and putting the wife out on the street to pay for all this. Actually scrap the wife bit I may have to refund. All suggestions will be gratefully received just to restore my faith in a vehicle I have always wanted.:confused:
 
You got one of the best cars in the world. It is the same MJ like mine and in that age it`s a normal procedure to change a few things.
Mayby it is a bit like you, everything is working properly (I hope) but you have to bee carefull.
There has been a 6 Month gap between two faults, imagine that would happen with your wife, 6 Months without discussion:D

As I see it, you have 3 probs.

1) Cruise control
2) Speedo
3) ACE

Is the speedo electronic or cable on these?
Is there any way to test it in situ? does it connect to the ECU or straight to the speedo?


update! - blurry eck - its complicated - int it?
Am I right in thinking that the Speedo signal comes from the SLABS ECU?

I'm an ex-Warburgs man myself and I run Discovery TD5 auto's in retirement but and it's a big but, I have learned and equipped myself to do all the work necessary to ensure my vehicles (yes, I know:eek:) run to their optimum.

The more I learn the cheaper it gets to repair any issues. For example a known problem that can occur is a leak with the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) as stated above - these cost between £100 to 125 depending on year of vehicle. However, once you learn that the leak is caused by aging rubber O-rings and a new set can be purchased for £4 !!! it reduces the car running costs quite considorably;);)

TD5 autos are really excellent vehicles in my opinion, but I would judge them as enthusiasts cars and need regular attention. They will do everything you need - provided they get what they need.

Unfortunately too many garages who try to service these vehicles are either ill-equipped in terms of experience/training/tools or under too much time/money pressure to do the job thoroughly.

Some are also just straightforward fraudulent - my current car was serviced by a "specialist Land Rover" garage who always charged the customer for Land Rover parts (re expensive) then fitted cheap aftermarket parts.

If you do/learn to do the work yourself you can choose what quality level of parts you use and know exactly what is going on with your vehicle - plus it is actually very satisfying.

Dont give up hope - there are guys on here with Nanocom and stuff. I bet it can be sorted - mite just need a day in the country or summat.

Very rarely is it that LZ is beaten. Common guys (and gals, Minty ;)). What can we do to help here?

yu forgot yo broken T-box bolts - is it common for these to shear?

Fingers crossed things may be looking up - will fill you in at work on friday suffice to say one may fix three!!!!!!! forgot the bolts but will tell more when researched
 
Sadly, none of you guys out there came up with a solution which was a bit dissappointing for me as a first time visitor. Never mind though my very helpful landy garage came up trumps by overwiring the connecting block and adjacent wiring which had fractured. The speedo now works, the ACE warning light has gone out and for the first time since getting the vehicle I now have cruise control. As they had tried to rectify before I did not get another bill. Life is good at the moment but I am fully aware now that owning a Disco is wonderful when it is working but your worst nightmare and financial drain when it doesn't.
 
If you enjoy archaeology the Disco is just for you...............Most of the time you will be covered in **** trying to identify various pieces of rusty old metal :D
