Well its give up
disco 1 300tdi
been geting a sqweak in 1,2 and 3rd but only under a certain load n seems to be a certain rev aswell
but in 3rd onwards in any sort off load it vibrates the whole landy
like can't go over 40
so been taking it easy
Untill last night went to get gta5 :) lol
And on way back coming to the lights whilst braking there was a big off a tug and grumble crunch thing anyway didnt feel or sound good
was close to home so 1st gear babied her home
braked for right turning onto my street and again a weird tug and squeal

anybody know ?
Its not wheel bearings as checked them last week

As above, check UJ's first then everything in the drivetrain ..

However, I wouldn't discount the wheel bearings. Did you take the wheels off to check? _EVERY_ time one of my wheel bearings has gone it's been the inner bearing, not the one you can see, and in every case I could have simply tightened up the outer bearing to remove all play and it would look and feel good .. till it went completely!

Everytime I check bearings now I remove the calipers and hubs to check the inner races properly. Just be careful when putting the oil seal back on the shaft .. ;)

I bought ujs thinking it was that but now am ****ting it as got told i need to change gearbox oil after everytime i go wading
Erm i did check both sides as they were filled with **** from the day before on a green lane trip
n regreased and tightened up but ill have a quick look ,
Tbh im hoping its the ujs as all ready bought them and its none off the diffs
whats more common the front or back ?

Thanks guys :)

Now do i get under it tonight in the rain
or get in bed and play gta5
hmmm i might just quickly take prop off as again been told its the only proper way to check ujs and see if anythings going on

Grab prop with 1 or 2 hands and shake.if it moves its uj.if it stays still its good.i had a uj go on me n it did the same.now i change every service and carry a spare with me.

Hey up Chris

Was just about to say what wise old man Paul said :D

After a few years off roading in this game you realise that quick inspection doesn't work out.

I realised when I first started that every single component needs replacing because no old components will stand up to off road use.

You don't need to change your gearbox oil after every wading trip, that's bollocks, BUT when was the last time you had the transmissions out to replace the output flanges and all the input and output seals, etc etc

If you've recently started doing this game you have a few very hard years of constant prep to do before it becomes as reliable and the veteran vehicles.

And even they break down :D

I am kinda busy right now with more jobs, tasks and things to do than I have time for but I feel we should meet up seeing as you are so local so i need to pop over one time and we'll give yours a once over.

Wheel bearings squeak by the way so I'm on Paul's team right now :)

Hi sam i see what u mean but also ive found that some cars are just cursed
i mean someone could say spend 5k just modding ect and it could still be less realiable that someone thats spent hardly anything

i will be changing gearbox oil soon tho but as soon as it stops raining n i have time ill get under it,
I did try and shake the prop last week n there seemed to be no movement thats why im thinking off taking it off
it had a new engine and box last year as previous owner drowned the last one
hope its a quick fix anyway lol
and thanks for offer sam u have my number so if ur ever free and out and about feel free to call round and give it a once over

even better still can swap wheels with me if you want think they would look better on mine :p hahah

Im with Paul and Sam on the bearings, unless you have had the hubs off you really havent checked em, most of, if not all, my failed bearings have been inner ones and i also have done the repack and tighten trick thinking that they were sorted only to have them fail less than a week later.

the vibration does sound like UJs though or rear doughnut, it looks like you have a good few hours locating on your hands then the inevitable replacement time to do too.

Good luck with it and dont forget to post up the answer when you find it.

Mrnoisy, dont suppose you fancy doing a "how to" thread on changing output flanges and seals?
Its a job i need to do but got no idea on how to do it?

Terry.

Tis reyt easy but it's also in busters guides as part of a bearing swap iirc.

Literally remove props, undo big nuts, pull off flanges, pull seals and replace, replace with new flanges, new felt washer, metal washer and nut back on, job done.

Use Viton seals ideally, the brown ones!

Well guys sorry no pics but wow what can i say propshafts are like dead arm heaven , absoulte pain in arse
but anyway front prop the back one , ome off the 4 sides had no needle in it some howw :O
So done that uj
umfortunatly not cured the sqweek or the other crunch soo hmmm
Sadly my grandad passed away thursday night so as u can imagine im involved with that one looking after family so ill have a look at wheel bearings as soon as i get time
thanks again guys
