and being the numpty i am i cannot see how to get to the bottom rad hose,

If I remember right, getting the bottom hose off involves a bit of crawling around under the front of the car, or take the fan cowling off and depending on which way round the jubilee clip is on you can get to it that way.

Still think you'll find it's the head gasket. Have a look at my previous... Overheating Disco 300TDi. Might save you some questions...

Best of luck!

dom, cheers for that, i'm kinda hoping it isn't going to be the head, you are probably right though!
Have read your thread, does sound familiar! will keep you updated.

Cheers

If it is the head it's not too big a deal.

I hadn't had a spanner in my hand for quite a few years and managed it in less than 8 hours total (if I merember right). And now I OWN the motor - it's not yours until you've been up to your elbows in Landy juice! ;)

Where aboots in the country are ya?

cheers, i'm actually looking forward to it, but it is blody freezing!!
I'm in Northants on the Beds border, i must go and update my profile ;)

ok chaps,

have changed thermostat and water pump, flushed through rads, put everything back together and.... it is pretty much the same, took it for a gentle run, i got heat for about 30 seconds and then nothingthe temp sits rock steady at the middle during idle and goes up a little while pottering around, under load though it goes up to just under the top white bar, never above it, i am running without a fan at the moment though (if that makes any difference)

So what do you think, HG or still air blocked somewhere?

Thanks in advance
Nathan

Sorry to say I'm pretty sure it's your gasket pal. Best break out your torque wrench (or find a mate who's got one).

Have you checked the little Y piece in the breather tubes between the header tank, rad and stat housing? Mine was blocked, but the damage was already done.

also , if i need any more confirmation. when i took off one of the heater pipes, it was smoking, which i assume is the head gasket breached? is this common?

Nathan
