hi all...

have a disco 300tdi.. uk spec, right hand drive

changes into hi and low range and works without any issues.

diff lever moves over to diff lock without any issues

diff lever linkage is free and moves without any issues and i can see it pushing the sproget lever over towards the drivers side on top of the transfer box

the problem i have is even when the diff lock lever/linkage/sproget is enagaged i still have no diff lock engaged.

i have tested this by jacking up just the front passengers side wheel and with the diff lever/linkage engaged i am still able to spin the wheel.

does this mean the transfer box is dead?

thanks
steve

That's as it should be, the axel diff is allowing the wheel to spin if it didn't you wouldn't go around corners very well.

Surely you would need one front and one rear to be spinning, as tuning one front will rotate the center diff.

might mean you need to check/adjust diff lock linkage

Research how the diff lock works first. Yes it's a 4x4 but it's actually only 1 wheel drive if 3 are stuck. Put diff lock in it becomes 2 wheel drive (1 on each axle) The diff lock is in the centre diff not the axles.

thanks.. im just follow the guide on here.. (see link above).. it says:
======================
Start by attempting to engage the diff lock with the lever. Then jack up one front wheel, just one though. Throw the truck in neutral with something blocking the rear wheel so it doesn't roll off the jack. Try and spin the wheel that is up in the air. It should not spin if the diff lock is engaged.#
======================

however what you are saying is different..

which way is correct.. how can i test the diff lock is working?

thanks
steve

That guide is bollocks.
Jack up any wheel off the ground using the bottle jack. Now with the diff lock NOT engaged gently try to drive away. The wheel in the air will rotate but that will be it.
Now stop the wheel from rotating by using the brakes, engage the diff lock and try to drive away again. This time the vehicle should go forward falling off the jack as it goes.
Please do this gently as a spinning wheel suddenly gaining grip can snap the half shaft. (Learnt the hard way).
Do not engage diff lock on a solid surface.
Do not engage it when wheels are spinning.
Read the ground conditions in front of you and engage the diff lock just before you need it. And disengage it when you approach a solid surface again or deem it not required.
