I've got the option of a all the gear from a burnt our Disco i.e axles, 300tdi auto box and transfer box etc - are these a straight swop into a 1985 90. In particular I fancy the rear axle with discs but if I can get an auto the other half might be prepared to drive it!

The axle is a straight swap. The engine is a wee bit trickier but steve parker does all of the conversion bits, the auto box is only good if with the 200 or 300 tdi

you wouldnt need conversion bits if fitted properly disco would have nearly all you need apart from rear exhaust as down pipe would fit, only engine mounts to cut off and refit

strange the 300 TDi sits further away from the radiator and intercooler than it does on the disco. So you need intercooler pipes and water pipes or you have to extend them, The exhaust you can make fit or buy a new down pipe and alter the rest of the exhaust to suit

not if you fit it factory with longer bell housing on gear box with 300 tunnel floor plates etc which for a bit extra cost makes a good conversion

The 300 sits further back, about 2 inches I think, if you are using the 90's original gearbox. If you use the gearbox from a 300 90 then it will in as it should, same as if you were to use the auto from the disco. That's how I understand it.

Edit: jamesmartin beat me to it!

Just done this exact conversion . 300tdi auto into defender 1985

enngine sits as it does in discovery so no need to extend pipes.

for best job get defender 300tdi seat box and tunnel although you can hack and get old ones to fit.

change speedo housing from back of old box as auto is electronic.

I had to get my front prop shortened by 2" and rear prop extended by 2" as neither disco or landy prop fitted .

auto box oiler cooler needs to be mounted . in my case bought a smaller oil cooler as disco one a bit long .

use the disco cross member need to cut a bit out as its to wide to fit between chassis.

hope this helps

Hmmm intersting. Piccies please.
Im just nosey i have a factory fit 300TDI, just very curious about the conversions

me too...well almost...300tdi manual box in to a 110

enngine sits as it does in discovery so no need to extend pipes.
hmmm debatable

cheap option...cut it up

change speedo housing from back of old box as auto is electronic.
do that when its out!!!! I didnt and it was a bas///d. Also change the handbrake linkage. I didnt...used the disco hanbrake...redrilled the back plate to turn it 90 degrees so disco cable reaches defender lever.

I had to get my front prop shortened by 2" and rear prop extended by 2" as neither disco or landy prop fitted .
arghhh £££££...easier to mount the engine/box to match the propshafts and extend the hoses.....or dont extend them keep the rad near the engine to allow 3" of space for large intercooler :D

not mine...fitted perfectly. roughly 6 inches back from the 110 crossmember. Tried the gearbox/trans first with the 110 (petrol/lt77) transfer box mounts but that makes the gear/trans box sit too far the the left so engine sits at an angle. abandoned that plan and used the disco crossmember and it sits straight, had to drill a couple of holes each side of the crossmember for the 3 long bolt that go through the chassis. 1 fitted the 2 needed new holes

Thanks for the advice might just strip out the parts for the moment as I've just found that the rear cross member and chassis legs have to be replaced - oh the joys of Land Rover ownership!
