Pretty sure all the big workshops will say body off.
But that's not strictly true or easy for us folk without the big kit. so I would point you at this thread and wait for @tyregeezer to advise he seems to have done it a few times.

Whats the problem with yours? the engine may not have to come out.
Unless its of course another broken crank  .

Hi mate it will come out with gearbox from the front, it's not too bad really, have a look at my thread should give you a idea at least how I do it anyway
I don't have a lift either, just a hoist and axle stands needed, all the best like to hear of people doing it themselves any help give me a ping
Remember many jobs can be done motor in why are you removing?

Hi,

Crankshaft has broken. The crankshaft pulley is not moving as it should. Connected a 21mm impact socket onto it and you can hear it clunk as it turns. Got a donor vehicle sitting right next it. Going to remove the engine and gearbox and put it into mine.

Hi mate

Indeed and in awe of what you’ve managed to achieve with said tools

Bless u for sharing an insight of what’s involved and a very enjoyable read for the comfort of our chairs

all the best and following ur thread with interest

Does sound like a broken crank, doner motor is the cheaper option, absolutely change belts would also suggest OEM oil pump and seal, also you might want to check the filter for any signs of trouble, it's as far as you want to strip really, I would remove sump extension and check for signs of rust if its stood too long, example if you replace bearings and all necessary bolts, gaskets, and seals it's about £1000 in parts, but you will then know exactly what you have, but that's just me
Check out @gstuart service guide in discovery section for more heads up on this motor
My thread on engine removal body on might give you some insight into whats involved
It's not as hard as people might think I'm 60 and can remove and refit on my own using this method, just take your time, be safe

Total change of plan now on z, pulled engine and gearbox covers and all others, wow oil every where down back of motor, about a good cupful in bypass valve some doesn't seem related to turbo or rocker cover but could be wrong, new plan remove motor and see what is occurring go through it belts etc, will be a chance to learn about D4 clean everything up, going to try using same method as for D3 for removal
