Hello all.

As a Freelander owner at the moment and aware of the problems that they can have, when the time comes soon to change vehicle i was looking at going after a Disco3 or 4. About 08 or 10 plate.

My question is, are there any problems to look for on these Landrovers?

I've had a D3, now have a D4, both have been great to me, owned both from new, D3 sold at 130k, D4 currently on 61k
 
I went from a Freelander V6 to a D3 a year ago. One thing to bear in mind is cost. The D3, being very heavy eats suspension bushes and brakes like you wouldn't believe. For instance, it's not uncommon for a Freelander to require front pads at 40 to 50K mile intervals. The Discovery halves that and some. Same for bushes. It's not uncommon to have to replace the lower front and upper rear arms at 2 yearly intervals. Not forgetting that the arms are well over £100 each for pattern parts, the bolts often need cutting out and 4 wheel alignment must be done on completion, makes the Discovery an expensive beast to own. However the give smiles that last for miles
 
Don't forget to check the cambelt change has been done if it's reached the age/mileage. Replacement is a big wedge of money. I was thinking of changing to a D3 early last year, and every single one I looked at was either due or overdue................
 
It really helps with D3 ownership costs if you can DIY. Because I am able to DIY everything myself, I can afford the D3. If I was reliant on the main dealers, the D3 would be out of my price range.
One thing to look out for is full history. Not just stamps in the book either but full history with receipts for work done. It's horrifying to add up the cost of a D3 over say a 10 year period. My own D3 has cost, from adding up receipts a figure of around £15,000. That's over £1,500 per year, every year since new. I myself had to spend best part of £700 for its Mot in April. I needed 2 front lower arms, front and rear anti roll bar bushes, rear brake pads and EPB shoes and a new propshaft. I'm just about to spend best part of £600 on tyres after getting the suspension alignment done again.
So a D3 isn't that cheap, especially compared to the old Freelander but it's a massive improvement in every other way.
 
Thanks for all your replies. It's good to get some honest and un-biased information. I'm not in a rush to change vehicle so can wait till the right one comes along.
