When I bought my Disco 2, I did loads of reading, learnt all about the common faults, looked at several cars. And then bought one sight unseen on eBay, because it was cheap. Yes I'm stupid. And yes it did have many of the common faults... Still, it's been fun so far!

I'm idly considering an upgrade to a Disco 3. Before I do, what advice can you give me? I'd like to think that I've learned my lesson and will take it all on board, but even if I am seduced by another 'bargain', at least you'll all be able to say 'I told you so...'

So, Disco 3, what do I need to know?

D3's are awesome motors, generation on from the D2 as is all the kit on it.

Get your own diagnostics for it and be prepared for more expensive parts than your D2 ;)

Disco 3s look great but suffer with many problems, especially when they get to the age and mileage most can afford. The electronic handbrake appears to be a common failure point along with front suspension bushes. The suspension arm retaining bolts are often seized requiring imaginative removal solutions. Turbo replacement and some engine repairs require the body to be removed from the chassis. It is a very heavy vehicle and the 2.7 diesel struggles to haul it along. The 3.0 litre in the Disco 4 is a better unit by all accounts. The Disco 4 is light years ahead of the 3 being a far smoother ride and an interior that would look at home on a Range Rover.
As with all things Land Rover, buy the best you can afford, make sure it has a warranty, keep several thousand in the bank for when it goes wrong.
