Disco 2... the rust continues

That round plate is the access to the fuel pump in the top of the fuel tank. it looks like the sealing gasket has either failed or is missing.

I am a complete novice... does this mean that there maybe something underneath the plate that could be an issue or may it just be a case of replacing the gasket and plate?

So far as the rust on and around the plate, there's not much to do, just clean it up by removing the rust and give it a spray over with some rust killer and some paint.

Your main area of concern must be the condition of the chassis beneath the back part of the body. The area directly underneath the plate is the top ov the fuel tank and to all intents and purposes it is open to the elements.

Since as you say you are a novice, it might be worth having somebody give the chassis a look over.

apart from any corrosion underneath youve water entering the cabin probably sunroof seal or door seal etc,the moisture gets trapped under the insulation and causes rot

I quite agree and have planned on getting someone to have a look at the chassis and underside (which are a couple of advisories on the mot). I've been stiched up a number of times by garages therefore wanted to get a bit of an idea from you knowledgeable guy's before I book it in.

Yes there is/has been water entering via the sunroof, though It does look as though the water has been entering via the front sunroof as there is no signs of water stains in the rear of the roof... I could be wrong though as it is new to me. P.s... it' not 'moisture' over the fuel tank plate there are actual 'puddles' in the floor (where the 3rd row seats clip into the floor).

compared to the floor body paint the plate is poorly protected and the moist atmosphere under the insulation will rot it

Would anyone have any suggestions of someone in Essex area that could have a look at the underside of the car without Stitching me up?? Probably need a welder?

If that plate is the only rust you have, you are one lucky owner!

I wish it was the only rust! Other than that it's the rear chassis, front floor.... and all the other usual places based on what I've read on these forums. Though, from what I've found/seen so I'm hoping to have got this disco before any of it has got too bad. Fingers crossed.

Think Land Rover should`ve added a welder as part of the accessory options when buying lol. Just spent most of the weekend with mine up on home made ramps removing rust using salt remover, degreaser wire wheels and pressure washer and airline before getting the rust converter out. Mainly concentrated on the inner chassis & areas that are going to be hard to access when I put the clutch, dmf, and recon gearbox back on. Still it`s worth putting in the time with the prep work to get a longer lasting finish in the rust battle. It was my old 90 that got me into welding, before taking it up as a career.
