Hi all
I have a 2001 Td5 Discovery and the fob battery keeps going flat.
I put another new one in on Friday and it is flat already!
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
James

A couple of questions first:
  1. Apart from the battery apparently going flat, does the fob work correctly in every other way?
  2. Are you using new good quality batteries such as Duracell CR2032 or "ten for a quid" pound shop specials?
Hi there
When iv installed a new battery the fob locks/unlocks etc. Works like this for a few days then wont work anything.
Yep using Duracell CR2032's
Thanks
James

Do you keep key with others on a key ring and is it hung up or generally in your pocket with a load of others?
Reason is I used to have this problem with an old nissan and found the button got depressed when in my pocket.
Never had it on my td5 though.
Also, if I put the nissan key safe for a bit it recovered and worked ok; does yours?

How do they KNOW the fob battery keeps dying?
What are the lights on the fob doing? are they on the whole time?

apart from that not much else than you have said me old mucker.

Cheers

I was going to ask about the little led on the fob but forgot to, but the OP did say that the fob worked correctly with a new battery in it. From what I know of the circuit of the RF transmitter in the fob, it only becomes active when one or other of the buttons is pressed. If neither button is pressed then there should be no current drawn by the circuit at all.
Obviously to see if the transmitter circuit is active it would take a certain amount of test kit and a bit of knowledge of RF measurements, and possibly a spectrum analyser. Sadly, I no longer have access to such exotic test gear these days.
The only other thing the OP could try is to measure the current being drawn using a multimeter. I'll have to get around to checking and recording how one of my fobs works under that kind of test. Failing that, if he has another fob to hand he could send the iffy one away for test/repair.

Of course there is the old.

Rf interference, so fitted the battery it works , drive home does not work....Must be the battery???

Cheers

Hi there
Keys are kept out of my pocket when not in use.
Thanks

Hi there
Fob works with a new battery for approx 6 days then won't work, I then install a new battery and it works faultlessly again for some days.
It isn't failing after installing a new battery then driving home.
Thanks
James

Power drain?

Check for any moisture on the PCB.

Check switches not knackered (they can squish and fail, I replaced them on one of mine)
