Gentlemen, can I have some advice please.

I need to change the power steering pump on my 03 Discovery 2 and there is bound to be some loss or leakage of fluid when the old unit is removed.

Given that the special power steering fluid (STC 50519) in the system is probably 10+ years old I may as well drain and refill with new PAS fluid.

Does anybody know the fluid capacity of the entire system - PAS box included. There is no mention of the capacity in the handbook.

What are your opinions about using an alternative make, eg Ravenol as opposed to the Cold Climate fluid recommended by Land Rover itself?

Thank you.

if it has ACE use the STC 50519 for both as it's better for the ACE and there's a "communication" between the oils in the tank's top...or at least what ever you use use it in both as it's not healthy to mix oils. if no ACE use any PAS fluid you want...iirc 2l would be enough, at least that's how much i've got when i refreshed mine...i used an original method though: i removed the return pipe and directed it into a can, clogged the tank's return hole, removed the fuel pump relay and put my wife to crank it while i was filling the tank with the new fluid, when i was close to the second bottle's end i stopped refitted the return pipe and topped up, letting around 100ml for spare, i presume that up to 2l is enough as at the end i saw clean fluid coming out...it didnt need bleeding this way;)

sierafery.

That was excellent and informative, thank you.

My D2 doesn't have ACE, so just one reservoir for PAS fluid.
I didn't know that it isn't necessary to use the "special" fluid in a D2's PAS system.

Thanks a lot.

dont use some cheap sh*t though, the original stuff is the best anyway just that the PAS system is not as 'squeamish' as the ACE that's all ... better use ATF Dexron III than some no-name fluid
