Hi,
The disco is going in for it's MOT in a few weeks and I've just noticed that the side light comes on in the headlamp on the n/s and the top of the indicator lens on the o/s.Any ideas what's causing it?

Earths, earths, earths.

Did i mention earths;) check all the blubs and holders for crud and work back.

Could be switch or stalk but I dont know them. but start with the easy stuff:D.

Thanks for the quick reply, will investigate the earths, is the sidelight to be on in the headlight? And if so, what's the bulb in the indicator for?
 
Does it only happen on 1 side. Have you had the car a while?
As I said I dont know the Disco but it just sounds like a classic earth issue.

Yes, had the car for a nearing a year, but this is the first MOT I'll have put it through.
Its weird as it does the two different things on either side, I did think mabye someone had got the plugs swapped between the indicator light and headlight sidelight, but the loom is seperated.
Think the MOT man might see it and if fail it for having a light out, even though it's on just in a different place

and yes I was shocked too!!! Thought only Merkin and other foreign cars had em.:rolleyes:
What happens when you test them with all the other lights off?
But yes, as all the others have said, earths are a common problem and have been for years on all sorts of cars.
Also make sure all bulb holders are really clean.;)

Ah so you have now started to look;) so could the little bulb in the indicator have been on all the time, as you say its happening on both sides? As above ref running lights ^^^ .

If you are missing a white side light yes he probably will, start there. Change the bulb even:rolleyes:.
It will be something really simple :D.

Could well have been like this the whole time, I've got enough to do without actively looking for problems;)

I've just put a circuit tester on them, and the earths seem to be fine from the holder to the battery. What's weird though, is that the bulb in the indicator lens has 12v on it with the sidelights on yet the same bulb in the n/s has nothing on it.
So are the running lights are the ones in the indicators, or the ones below the main headlamp bulbs?

Thanks for the advice, as you say it'll probably be something really simple and obvious once I find it,and I'll look like a right prat.
 
Right I've just gone and checked mine out.
When you put the sidelights on, (small bulb in the same lamp as the low and high beam), the running lights come on which are at the top outer corner of the indicators and are amber cos they are covered by the same lense.
When the indicators are put on, when the running lights are on, they just stay as they are, i.e. on steady.
I don't think faulty running lights are a problem for the MOT. as they are only tested on cars first used in 2018.
What you must have are proper, good indicators and side repeaters.
 
So to sum up, you have one sidelight, and one running light, on opposite sides.
Fix the other sidelight first, as that is deffo an MOT fail.

You do need to use the correct electrical terminology.
So if you didn't know “running lights” for this disco was that the head lamps being on in day light., like Volvo and other scandi vehicles of a similar era, and therefore different from the modern LED DRL
The D2 indicator lamp has the facility for the fitment of a “marker light”.

See: Page 41 of the the link of a D2 owners handbook which u no doubt will have a copy., but then maybe not :)

The vehicle's builder is causing it cos that's how it left the factory, they are oficially called "side-marker lights" , those A132 in the pic, same for the other side with the same feed as the side lights... i removed both those bulbs on mine and nobody seems to miss them

As you have a MM, check the resistance of the non-working bulb first, to confirm it's bust, then switch them on and use it to measure the voltage across the connections in the bulb holder to ensure current is crossing them.

I do have it, the manual, but I don't give a feck!
It don't have what you call running lights, it just has the marker lights.
There you go!;)

Thanks for the info, as you say, if I can't get the n/s one working I'll disconnect it, I doubt they'd pick up on it in the MOT.
I'll investigate the o/s side light in the morning, but hopefully it's just a simple wiring problem now.
All the help is much appreciated, it's luckily I booked a while week off work to make sure it goes through:D
 
@Defender91 do be very careful with taking the top screws off the headlamp. They are very prone to snap off and for the rest of it to set the brass insert spinning round and round. Lots of easing fluid and tapping over several days should help.
Google doing the job to see the hell it can be. And then there is the screw up the side under the grill.:rolleyes:

I'm sure you are a lot happier now you know the correct terminology for everything. It'll make it a lot easier to do the job!;)
 
As far as I understood it vehicles used on UK roads should only display white light to the front & red to the rear (except for reversing lamp(s) so those marker lights within the front indicator lens shouldn't be lit hence the reason new D2's for the UK market either had no bulbs in the marker light holders & or the wiring connector wasn't attatched to the bulb holder. So if amber light is showing to the front it should be an mot failure. The side lights (or parking lights because that's all they're fit for IMO, how many times have you seen people use them in low light/rain & fog ?:eek: thinking they can be seen) either within the headlight or separate should work & show white light.
I can't remember now but it might be possible to get the side & marker light wiring connectors mixed up as I think they're the same type of connector although the wiring colours are different.

Andy my MY2000 D2 came with amber marker lights as standard and has never failed an MOT yet. even though LR can be real tw@ts I don't think even they would build a car that would fail an MOT as standard.
Also, as I found out at an MOT donkey's years ago, you can drive a car with yellow headlights, but both must be yellow, I failed cos I had one of each and the inspector told me all this. They must simply match.
From the Gov.uk manual
"The colour of the light headlamps emit must be one of the following:

  • white
  • predominantly white with blue tinge
  • yellow"

But funnily I cannot find anything that says that amber markers are OK, probably because they only work when the sidelights/headlights are on, but that IS well weird.
