disco 2 advise please

Hi my missis had a go in my disco1 and is now on at me that she wants a disco2 the thing is i no very little about modern landrovers other than air suspension is a pain and electrical faults can be common.
She would have a TD5 auto idealy facelift but not sure iv seen a few with less than 100,000 miles and FSH full mot good condition. Id realy like her to have one but i dont want something that will be money pit due to problems that cant be repaired by myself like you can on a 300 tdi.
Any advise or ideas would be great thanks again ash
 
i think it depends on how much you are prepared or even able to do yourself. i got my d2 about 18 months ago without knowing a lot about them. same as you, the wife wanted one. i bought a hawkeye and have since done the airbags (very easy), wiper motor (fiddly) and am about to sort the fuel gauge out. as you already have a disco you got a bit of a head start and realise they need a bit of tlc to run smoothly.
i think that had i done some research before getting it i would have bought a d1 as they seem easier to work on. but having owned it i`m glad i got the d2 as with most things. once your familiar with some thing its not that bad.
 
I had a 1 now got a 2 and I love it. It did scare me to start with as I thought the same as you, just HOW expensive is this bugger going to be but then, I've accepted it comes with the territory! Air suspension IS worth the hassle IMO not just for drive but towing in my case. I got my '03, one owner, FSH with 69k on the clock, excellent condition so they are out there ;)

Oh and I don't fix my own, have to rely on others and just bought a set of rear air springs - had it since November lol! Wouldn't swap it for the world though!

Take the plunge be brave, theyre not that bad to work on. Worth it for the comfort. Plenty of great people with fantastic knowledge on this site who are always here to help.
 
Thanks gents she usualy gets her way so i dont think it will be too long before im posting some picks. If it was for myselfnto replace my 300 i wouldnt be bothered but as its for her il hardly ever drive it but i will be the one repairing it and you no what they can be like as soon as they hear a rattle or creek they wont it looking at. She currently has a rav4 which well made and reliable but is crap to drive.
Are parts still expensive for disco2

First thing I would ask is: does she need a D2 or does she just want one?

A D2 TD5 auto used around town driven by someone who is not sympathetic to what D2's need, will get about 20mpg if you're lucky !!!

Does she need one - ie for towing or something?

If it's not needed they very often turn initially enthusiastic owners into skint and frustrated peeps wanting to get rid.

D2 TD5 is a great vehicle, but it only works as a viable proposition if you want/need all that it has to offer. Otherwise they can be an expensive to service and repair white elephant.

Bit of a mixed bag then. She dosnt need one as such at the moment she has a 5dr rav4 petrol but its just not big enough, if it was for me id have a 110 but shes not keen were going to be getting a larger 4x4 its just what to get. She also likes jeep grand cherokee which are reliable but parts arnt cheap and its the same with most jap 4x4's.
i havnt got a clue to be honest
 
Yes mate more than happy with how they drive. Its just a case of i like my missis to have a reliable car that dosnt need sorting out all the time i have enough of that with my own cars. I dont mind routine maintenance and the odd thing
 
At the end of the day its always the missus who costs us money, even though we love em to bits, mine has her own car but managed to reverse it into my drivers door, managed to get another door & painted no problem, didnt cost me much, but all I got for a sorry was a f...in Toblerone as she knows I like em.Doesnt matter what car she has, as long as you have a missus it will cost you in money or sweat.
 
there a pain in the arse we had a year 2000 td5 disco about 8 years ago gearbox went and cost us over £1k to sort out..ecu failed 3 times..
had the 3 amigos appear twice.e/w failed sunroofs stopped working

after spending £10k buying it and £3.5k repairing it we sold it bloody heap of ****
