Disco 2.5 disel 96 belt or chain?

Indeed, belt.
Th early 300 tdi engines suffered from cam belt failure at around 30 k miles. LR modified the pulleys and produces a pulley conversion kit.
I would be surprised if yours has not been modified.
The camshaft is in the top of the block, not the head. The valves are operated by small push rods from the cam shaft to the rockers. These push rods are designed to be the weakest link and will bend should the cam belt fail.
In the bottom of the plastic cam belt cover you will find a threaded hole, this is the wading plug hole and should have a wading plug (available on ebay) fitted for wading. The bell housing also has a wading plug as you will find ebay sells them in pairs.

Cheers guys!

I was under the impression it was chain (silly me for not checking when buying)

I'm gonna have to do it, it seems easy to do from what you said... I might take it to garage to be done. Any idea of a rough price?

Thanks again!

garage, should be around £100 for the kit, and a couple of hours labour. make sure they use OEM parts and not pattern, and make sure they know how to check if its been modified or not, though tbh if they dont, go elsewhere...
