Thank you,
both been out in Disco fiddling and searching in case I missed the amp and checking things out.......Well the Jap one does not need a code, just powers up and works which is odd, intially it did not but had a loose connection. Land Rover appear on the display.I took some snaps the Jap one one was made in France and the UK one was made in Japan. The UK one has more options LW,FM and MW. Still cannot get any songs from UK one.
Please can i ask what wire goes where to power the amp from the radio?,lots of space behind where the radio goes for it i think.. I think i would need to trace each speaker wire back to the head and then cut it connect it to the new amp and then connect from the new amp to the plug that goes in the radio...am I right please? I am thinking i can prise the speakers out or am i wrong?
I am very grateful for the information and help...I would be really struggling with this. without your help ...As an option what do you think of the plug in frequency things on e bay?...I heard mixed reports of them.I would not be able to get RDS, but may have to put up with that.

Radio pics 1st one is Jap unit,2nd UK third my dash wires, yellow plug is steering wheel buttons.

Just reading your post again PP, am I right in thinking if i can get a radio unit from a base or mid range Disco it would solve my problem as the amp would come with it?..looking at the RAVE document that would seem to be an answer or have i gone off on a wrong pathway ?

For my Disco no separate amp is shown so the UK radio I have must be for a posh one top of the range....I thinks i ne ed to get a part number for a bas for mid range radio...will check out Rave.

I was hoping for pictures of the front of the radios, that would help when searching on tinternet to help you!
Please can i ask what wire goes where to power the amp from the radio?
Using a meter set to volts, unplug everything then turn the key to position one, go to each pin connector in turn until you find the live one, you may even find two, in which case see which one ONLY comes on when the ignition is turned on, the other will be for the radio's memory of its code. Once you've found the one powered from the ignition, you have got the power for your amp as well, just piggy back off it.

i would need to trace each speaker wire back to the head and then cut it connect it to the new amp and then connect from the new amp to the plug that goes in the radio.
Exactly right, although ALL this stuff is in RAVE wiring diagrmas or somewhere hasn't @sierrafery been on already about this? If not i think you'll find his remarks in one of the threads I linked you to.

I am very rusty on all this now, as I labour with anything electrical, but I think you need to ensure that the speaker wires coming from your head unit are only at low power, I think we have established that but it cannot hurt to check, as some amps can only amplify signals at low power whereas others can cope with signals coming out of the head unit that have aleady been amplified. And am not sure, but i think some can even sense for this somehow then sort themselves out. Really dunno. You may also need jackplugs of a certain type.
At the end of the day it is four pairs, eight wires, 4 +ive out and 4 -ive back in, you just need to ensure the right one goes to right side of each speaker as it were so that they do not get out of phase, though I am told peeps don't worry about that anymore.
Wish someone who really knows would jump on this thread, i am really scared of giving you bad advice!

Sorry Stanley steamer...her ewe go front pics. 1st on his Jap one, no RDS button RHS,2nd one UK one with ! RHS which does get traffic info.
I do appreciate your help ,me putting in a amplifier looks hard I see on RAVE the pins for the connections are identified, wonder if they are same for jAP radios......I am trying to find a part number for a radio with a amp fitted any suggestions, checked out RAVE but cannot see one, maybe looking in the wrong bit.

First and last of the three are the same, right?

I must get on and do some plumbing or wifey will kill me when she comes back! but I think you'll find what you want somewhere on here. The plugs are not wired different for each manuafacturer and as far as I remember not only are they common much of the time but it is also possible to get new plugs and connectors, even from quite small shops or online as I seem to remember doing that when wiring my Blaupunkt Head and disc player into my Disco one. The steering wheel buttons didn't work but even that can be done with a conversion kit!

All the best

Sorry your doing plumbing i hate it, always get leaks',I coat everything with sealer regardless,I use LSX great stuff!...thank you for all your help and PP i am seeing a bit of light thanks to both of you.

Will continue my search for a radio with a amp if pos, if not i will buy a amp , not sure which one,I think what pp said about his being mounted on the big steel platform under the passenger seat would be best as it may get warm, then run some cable through the Disco to the radio....epic job for me.

That is certainly the way I see it, the amp must be built into the base/mid range units as there is no amp anywhere else and the outputs of the unit go straight to the speakers. I think the base/mid "radio" is the C42. The details are in RAVE.

By the way, how did your Disco get a Japanese market radio? Was it an import?

PP

Hello PP,
Thank you for the info I will look for C42 model,I have sure learnt a lot from you and Stanleysteamer. I could not find it in RAVE.I will try again.

Disco is an import I had a TD5 which went a bit rusty, then a Series3 ,so thought I would try a Jap import.I went for one that had not been in UK for long, so tin worm was not active. He his very clean underneath, saving up to get him treated with Dinitrol.I have read on this forum that they seem to be popular for rust proofing.
It takes 3 days and you get pictures with a loan car. I looked at quite a few Jap imports, some had been in UK for say 5 years and were showing some signs of rust, but not to bad.I did look at a lovely Disco 1 ,which was wonderful, but it was £10k bit more than i could manage. My Disco is a V8 so not good on fuel, but i do not do many miles. I did learn when you buy these you must get a certificate of export from Japan. This verifies the mileage. My speedo is in mph, but odometer is still in km.I am told this is because the odometer is linked to the ECU and cannot be converted.
I will update my radio issues.
cheers

Finished the plumbing now, last bit in our new kitchen thank god. Only use push fit and compression fittings nowadays can't be bothered with all that soldering lark. Only had one gush of water for a nanosecond. Push fit not quite "in". then spent a fruitless half hour searching for one small pack of machine screws to get two out for the last handle on the last cupboard door.Isn't it always the way? I'll faff about, buy another pack then find the first one when I'm not looking for it!

I'm glad we have been able to be of some help. Mixing and matching bits for radios is a bit of a nightmare. I have still to fit an amp to the Blaupunkt as it came out of a Citroen Xsara as it is not man enough for a D1. Also there was a sub amp with subwoofers which sounded great until it basically fell to pieces. Was amazed to discover you can find repair kits for the cones, which is all that was wrong, they had just worn out and only fitted at the bases. Bought a huge great powerful amp off the bay for very little money but no obvious way to wire it up conventionally. but once in will probably blow my speakers off the doors. Don't know hwo far I want to go with this as don't use the radio etc that much, except four times a year on long journeys. And If wifey is in the car we have to have a story as we don't like the same music, much!

Let us know how you get on!

Ah, that explains a lot!

In RAVE, go to Disco 2 Library > In-Car Entertainment you will find the handbook for the C42. It has RDS at least!

Cheers.

Thank you will have a look. I have the workshop manual from Rave is the library on the Landyzone please?
I did buy a paper copy of the radio handbook which was pricey for a few pages, but no part numbers for the C42,I think it was made by Phillips. Found a CD plate rto connect to C42 unit in US on e bay.
I hoped someone would have one fitted and could tell me the number on the sticker on the radio.

I'm hoping you have the same full version of RAVE I have. When you go into the "Discovery II" section, instead of selecting the "Workshop Manual" in the Navigation Pane on the left of the screen, select "In Car Entertainment". The C42 handbook is in there.

Good luck.

Thanks PP it is an automatic.I will photo graph the Jap radio back bit.I think its a genuine LR unit.Only difference I can see is on the fascia the Jap one does not have a RDS button.
I have got RAVE which is great ,think our postings crossed. If you could look under the seat that would be great please.
Big question!!

How do I get a copy of RAVE????
Thanks in advance

Thank you PP i will work through it,I use a Mac so i do have some issues, but will keep on it.I am looking for a C42 unit, seems most for sell fit with a CD and amp under the seat.Top models.
I am going to keep searching.
