Disco 1 aftermarket stereo??

I've managed to wire up the unit for 12v perm live and switched live and earth but can't figure out how to get the speakers to work???
Think they must go through an amp somewhere in the car??
Thinking i might have to do new speaker wire runs to each speaker to "bypass" the amp???

Probably one for 'discool' but afaik there is no factory amp available for the 4 main speakers, they should be wired direct anyway. But I could be wrong if it was available as an option...?
 
My Pioneer head unit was simple, out with the old and then connect 2 of the 4 plugs in the back.

One of the spares is for the CD changer, I don't have a use for it as I use an Ipod on USB connection

The other is for the amp, you can get an adaptor for that though so if you feel you want the subs in the rear door fabricate one using connectors
 
You will have an amp if you have a Japanese spec disco so will have to be removed.
Depending on the head unit there are patch leads available to interface your to the discos wiring.

Pics show two existing white plugs going into a new black patch lead socket... note a wire colour change that matches my Pioneer unit, that takes care of the electrical connections.

The dash switches I have never used but then my replacement unit which is from the 90s doesn't have the input anyway, so that would require another lead if U wish to retain that function and your head unit has the input as some still don't.

A lead I made up to provide the audio signal to the sub amp from the head unit pre-amplified output and then pluged into the existing socket, but they can be purchased.

And a birds nest of wires to put away.:)

I also had to install a Pioneer CD changer under the seat so the old Philips one sold on e'Bay for £40 :D

There's loads of info is existing in the forum so as they say " do a search" :)

Thinking that it might just be easier to re wire the speakers bypassing the amp - as you would in a normal car.

Did do a few searches but couldn't find any info on discovery 1 radio wiring??

I forget where the amp is now behind one of the kick panels i believe, but just trace the wiring from the head unit location and when u find the amp cut the loudspeaker wires then with nice soldered joints extend them back up to your new head unit. the colour code for the loudspeaker wiring is shown in the Haynes manual or just remove and look at their terminals.
There's no need for the amp or run wire to the loudspeakers unless u want the extra work..:)
 
there is plenty of threads but basically all you need to do is find the amp in the passenger footwell and you can connect the radio directly to the speakers from there.

When I did mine I used the existing plug for power and ran some new wiring up to the back of the head unit for the speakers. disconnected and cut the speaker wires going into the amp and connected them directly to the new head unit.

If you have a sub in the rear door then there is a bit more involved but mine didnt so didnt worry about it :)

Haven't got a speaker pod in the rear door so it should be easier to do.

Found the amp in the passenger footwell cut all of the speaker wires that went into the white plug and wired em straight up to my new cd player!

Works a treat!!!

I too have a Jap import disco 1, got the same issue.
Powers up lovely and head unit can drive a speaker i have to test connections, but none of the wires in the disco seem to do anything (even the ones that were previously connected via some pretty strange solders to exisiting wires).
Would be great if i can just feed it all to an amp (if the head unit already has an amp, wont you need to bypass the second amp, or do you still feed to it ?)


I have had a cursory look in the passenger footwell but nothing is immediately apparent. Where exactly is the amp (pics ?)
 
Fingle, you need to provide some banter, asking questions without banter and with only 3 posts under your belt doesn't usually get answers...

Hi mate how i found it: remove the passenger door speaker - look at the wire colours - remove the panel below the glove box - look for a black box with a long plug and lots of wires - look for the same colour wires as the door speaker - sorted!

The wiring colours are also on the wiring diagram in the haynes manual - if you haven't got 1 BUY ONE :D

I have the technical wiring diagram for Japanese spec Discovery. Send a pm and email address and I'll dig it out and send it. My amp was bypassed by auto electronics technician. Works just fine. All speakers work apart from rear door subwoofer which was disconnected.
 
When I took my std disco tape player out and replaced it, with after market cd player rear door speakers that give you bass stopped working.
My amp is in rear door, to get it working there is a pink iso connector which plugged in old disco stereo, that has 2 wires on it.
I just cut then off the connector and wired them to one of the rear panel speakers.
Now I have bass n all speakers work.
Dont know if this helps, but that's all I can offer.

Yeah sorry only had it a few weeks, and with a young family dont get a lot of time to chat on here. Will try to make an effort
