40 seems to be a bit of a lie given that the best figures possible are 35 IIRC unless it was all downhill!
300tdi auto between 20-25 on the motorway doing 70 ish and under 20 on a short run to work and back on cold mornings.I had a go at working it out once over a week , but really couldnt be arsed as its a 2 ton landrover and wasnt designed for economical driving .

ere mines doing well over 50 mpg
because i dont drive it to much
They quote over 40mpg on a 56mph run in the 200tdi manual owners manual. Auto might be another matter but a lot of these figures are from manual boxes
The way I look at it , is that yes it does use a lot of diesel but weigh that up against the wide availability and relatively cheap cost of parts compared to other manufacturers ( I own an old j*** so I know!) and that the only garage bill I pay out for has been for an m.o.t. every year.

To be fair, the auto torque convertor locks up at 52, so why shouldn't it do the same as the manual at around about peak torque on a long run ?
and theres nowt quite as obnoxious as a dickhead who thinks he knows it all when he obviously dont.
to be fair i didnt believe it either the first time i worked it out, but twas there in black and white .
but you beleive what you want , makes no difference to me.

The book figure for extra urban mpg on the 300tdi auto is 41.5mpg
