Hey All,

I checked the oil this morning and now the dipstick won't go back in! It gets about three-quarters of the way there and then seems to hit something...

Anyone know what's going on here? When I pulled it out there was a tiny piece of plastic on the tip which fell off (only 1mm or so) - has something been left in there? I have a few vehicles and can't remember for the life of me what the end of the dipstick looked like before.

It's a 2001 Diesel.

Thanks for any ideas, I'm stumped!

Nick

Theres a plastic guide on the dipper, mybe yours have cum orf um
ya pushed the fecker in the sump!! or wotever it was, its swimmin in oil now!!:amen:

If your diesel 2001 is a Td4 the bottom of the dipstick should look like below:

Hi Freefall
I had exactly this problem. I have an L-series diesel engine and the plastic button fell off and jammed in the dipstick tube. I couldn't plug in dipstick and in the end had to remove the tube. Can't remember what has to be stripped off first but it is an easy job. Tube just pulls out. I then removed the rest of the stupid plastic end and the dip stick goes in and out just fine now. Hope that helps.:)

Hi Greenie,

When you managed to get the plastic piece out of the tube just ask the distance of the "top" of the dipstick down to the max. and min. levels so that you can mark it on that piece of metal you, from now on, will call a dipstick ....:high5:

Had the same problem with my L series. The plastic tip just helps guide the dipstick down the tube around a bend, it seems. The markings are on the dipstick for max and min levels. My pastic tip fell off outside the tube. After that I could not get the dipstick all the way down, so then just filed the square corners on the tip to make it more rounded and in she went. Still working 3 years later, no probelm.

On the Td4 the min./max. markings are on the plastic piece. When Greenie manages to get the plastic out one of us Td4 owners can measure the distance from the bottom of the top yellow plastic piece down to the maximum and minimum marks so that he can put some marks (saw a cut in the side or so) on the all metal dipstick.

Ah might be wrong Willo, but I don't think Greenie is the one with the dipstick problem.:D :D :D

Part Number on the bottom of the dipstick on my 53 td4 auto commercial is 7785931
It is 705mm long, from the very tip to the top of the ring yu stick ya finger in
it is 679mm from the lower level mark to the top of the ring etc
it is 663mm from the upper level mark to the top of the ring etc
The ring yu stick ya finger in is 95mm from the top of the ring to the bit were the metal starts
