Hi all, just changed the oil on me new (old) 200tdi 90, have a bit of a question.

Had the truck less than a week, the level on the stick when I had it delivered was a bit high, first decent run today so dropped the oil out for a change while it were hot. Only got 3ish ltr out including filter ????

Very carefully filled to limit with 2.5ltr???

Turned over engine oil light went out.

Scratched me head awhile and chucked another 2 ltr in to make sure that it would at least be lubed up enough to run.

Wtf is going on?????

Genuine 120k miles (got all the mot's) and runs quite nice.

DOnt know whats going on there but you should have around 6lts in her .

If the vehicle is level and the dip stick is secure in the tube, and the tube secure in the block then fill to the correct amount 5-6 litres or whatever and cut a mark on your stick with a hacksaw. could be wrong dip stick.

Thanks for that david 451, yes I had considered doing that but then the gremlins started whispering "get some advise first, if I seriously overfill the turbo could start eating up all that lovely excess and the whole lot could go into meltdown"

I think the engine total cap is around 6.8ltr, allow a bit for the turbo and oil cooler and 6 might seem about right. Don't know though cos this is the first diesel I've had.

Does sound strange, the sump alone holds more than 2.5 litres. I am wondering if someone has fitted a smaller sump (not even sure what smaller sump they could have fitted but its the only thing that makes sense.

The thing is, the oil light will always go out as long as it can draw oil up the pickup and continue to do so throughout driving so although the light went out that is no indication that you have enough oil just pressure, first steep hill and you may run into trouble so you were right to put in more.

I would mark the stick with the new position, because you now know you have about 6 litres in it; unless you can find something obvious like a stange sump, or the dip stick or dip stick tube is the wrong one.

Maybe someone put half a brick in the sump pan to save oil like they do in loo cisterns to save water?

Best bet is dip stick wrong, or dipstick TUBE was broken, and shoved back with the bottom end missing.

VERY important to have the correct amount of oil in the system.

Ere Charlesy, aint I read somewhere about dipsticks being held in place with an O ring or summat and if it fails, the dipstick can move? I think Adz had this prob with his 300tdi.

The dipstick on my 300 snapped at the top mount, I put a new one in, it's just a push fit, as you say there is an o-ring and a channel with raised edges it sits in, it MIGHT be possible to horse it and push it in too far, but then the top mount would not line up.

Does the 200tdi have a bracket on the DS or is it like the older ones its only held at the base?

Well, on the strength of the comments from all on here I filled with a total of 6ltr and marked the stick to the new level.

Couple of short runs tonight (driving as normal) and no problems so far, so I guess everything is as it should be.

Many thanks one and all. :):)

If you want to be REALLY happy, find another Landy like yours and do this:

Get a nice CLEAN length of wire about three feet long and straight.
Check the oil level in the other Landy is up to the mark FULL.

Take your wire and poke it into the dipstick tube till it hits the bottom os the sump pan.

Pull it out, and mark the level of the filthy black oil.

I leave the next step to your imagination.

for the love of god just buy a new or used dipstick-how hard could it be:D

more likely to get monkey punched and pink socked by a gorilla

:D:D:D you'd be suprized just how hard that can be in france, unless I want to spend an extra £10 on postage. Havin said that not looking to be a cheapskate, just lookin for an easy fix.

Same goes for having a look at another 200tdi, cos there like rocking hoss do-dos over here.

So all you want is a piece of spring steel rod (model shop) and some measurements :D surely you have an equivalent of find a part or INTERNET breakers or ebay.fr
