Dinitrol application - what am I doing wrong?

Having finished painting my bulkhead I wanted to fill as much of the inside of it as possible with as much dinitrol as possible. I have both the aerosol cans and the tins for use with the compressor. The aerosols are working no problem.

I bought this spray nozzle for my compressor:

It has a very weak vacuum when no can is connected but it is definitely a vacuum. I connected the can and it did nothing, it then changed form being a vacuum to pressurizing the can and pumping dinitrol out of the vent hole.

At no point did it meaningfully spray any of the dinitrol out of the end of the hose. On removing the can it was still blowing from the can tube rather than a vacuum but it did then change back to vacuum although I did not do anything to make it change. I had not heated the can (is that the problem) but it was at a warm room temperature, it was not straight out of the garage.

What am I doing wrong and why is it not working. This is my first time with the compressor and I was under the impression it was an easy but messy job!

May i ask what psi did u put ur compressor at plse , also helps if u put the cans on a bowel of warm water

plus 1 as @flat mentions, will it spray without the tube attached , maybe it’s a faulty gun, where did u get it from plse

hope that helps a little

Ps, not wishing to try and teach j how to suck eggs, when you’ve finished with the aerosol cans and still have paint inside , turn them upside down and give the trigger a quick press ro clear them , I also bought an aerosol trigger , will find the link for u

hey man. Glad you are back :)

Will it spray without the long tube on the end? It may not be able to generate enough vacuum with the Venturi effect with the long nozzle one :(
I do not know. I will check tomorrow. Have given up today as it is in the barn.

I am running at 8bar (small cheap compressor) which might also be part of the problme. But if it is I need another way to apply it as I am not buying another compressor for the little use it gets.

The gun was a cheap eBay special but having read around plenty of people seem to be using them and treat them as disposable rather than go to the effort of cleaning.

I had exactly the same problem as you Mr dag019. I tried all sorts of arrangements with tubing etc, but still ended up nowhere.

In the end I bought a proper metal canister underseal spray gun. This one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121506217427.
Unfortunately, the price has gone stupid over the 16 months since I bought it. Mine was bad enough at £75, but now £100. If you can find something similar for cheaper then I highly recommend it. It was superb.

i used a 50 x litre compressor and a basic gun which worked very well , put a link in my other post which I must admit don’t know much about , hopefully @MJE will be able to advise better than myself

I have one of those sprayers with its own metal cannister which works well. I think mine was branded as a Sealey. By way of an experiment one day I screwed the sprayer mechanism directly onto the top of a Dinitrol can to see what would happen and it pressurised the can so that it distorted. It didn't burst, but the can attempted to assume the shape of a football. There's a very small amount of suction from my downpipe which I can just feel with my finger, presumably from the Venturi effect but there's a hole in the underside of the spray mechanism that pushes air at full pressure into the container so that the underseal is forced up the tube and hence out of the nozzle. Consequently it only really works with the correct pressure vessel on it and you can't spray directly from the can. The other thing it needs is a good seal between the pressure vessel and the spray mechanism. The original rubber washer it came with didn't last long and it started making a mess like in @dag019 's picture but fortunately it's not too hard to find packets of rubber washers of about the right size on Ebay.

So I think that the spray mechanism above was intended to be used with a proper pressure vessel and it's just not working with the cans.

Plus 1, funny u saying about the cans, saw a video sometime ago where a can had been over pressurised and exploded , christ could u imagine the mess of 1 x litre or underseal going everywhere , hard enough getting it off ur hands

plus did try Tetrosyl what absolute rubbish that is , was going to use it for some rock sliders , even the cans wouldn’t spray properly and ended up throwing it in the bin and getting dinitrol

made up a Lance for my karcher to clean the inside and outside of the chassis , then steamed cleaned it and allowed to dry , my god I couldn’t believe how long that took, but pleased with the results as it still looks the same a few years down the road

Personally didn’t have any issues spraying the 1 x litre dinitrol cans, did put the cans in some warm water beforehand , see there are some real cheap old rubbish guns

found a few piccies

I understand what you are saying but the one I have has a vent hole in the screw cap part of the sprayer that is just open to the air. This is hidden by the dinitrol pouring out of it in my pic, but it is this vent hole it is coming form not the seal between the can and the sprayer. I will clean it up and get a better photo this afternoon.

I did also find this one in my box of unused air tools that came with the compressor. Although it has a metal can it look like it also just relays on the slight vacuum from the Venturi effect. There does not look to be any way or pressurising the can. I think I was expecting the cab to be pressurised to force it out. I will try both of these with warm diniteol And see if either work this afternoon and if not find one that does put pressure into a proper canister to force it out.

Maybe it's just intended to pick up the material via the Venturi effect then. The fact that it is making a mess looked to me a little like it was pressurising the can. Maybe the fact that there's thick sticky Dinitrol in the spout and nozzle means that rather than blowing past and creating a Venturi, the air is coming down the pipe and pushing the Dinitrol out of the breather.

That was the conclusion I had come to is the spout was blocked/offered more resistance than through the can and out the vent hole. If it doesn't work with thinning/heating/combination I will bite the bullet an buy the proper pressure vessel gun

As promised here is the spray nozzel after a bit of clean where you can see the vent hole. and also a better picture of the spec of what I actually have.

@flat gets a cookie!

Having heated the dintrol in a very dangerous fashion (mess tin of water on a little gas camping stove with the dintrol tin in the water) I did manage to get it to spray from the direct nozzle but still would not spray from the tube. I cut the tube to a shorter length and it then worked with that as well.

I got about a liter of dinitrol into the a pillars and some of the cross box sections using the compressor and spray gun. I then got another 0.5l of aerosol into the cross box sections. Does that sound like it is likely to be enough? I know it is better than nothing but want it to last as long as possible. I go enough into it that is was oozing out of the holes at the bottom.
