Hi - have got an 04 discovery TD5 auto. Reversed it off drive on Sunday evening moved from 'R' to 'N' - had a moment of indecision - went back to 'R' and it would not engage any gear. No bangs, judders, smoke, fluids - no drama of any kind. Gearbox was under no load as drive is slightly downhill. It is as though it is stuck in neutral. Tried high and low range, engaged diff lock - still would not move.

It was serviced about 2k ago, gearbox oil changed then (100k) been working fine - even towed a caravan back 100miles on Friday without even a murmour or rumble.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas? Have checked gear selector in cabin, am thinking it might be electronic but would love a more educated opinion (1st one i have ever owned)

Thanks.

The car will only start if the gearbox is in park or neutral. What i'm thinking: if it starts in drive then it might be a gear selection cable problem
ie the gearbox is in neutral and when you move the selector it isn't moving the cable to change the gear. So it indicates different gears but the gearbox is still in neutral - might be a broken cable????

presumably dash gear indicator isnt changing with selector on consol, cable outer sleeve is clamped on passenger side of vehicle this can stop selection

Dash indicator does change to show what selector is on not sure where that gets its information from though.

has the cable slipped on the selector from the gearbox. if your selecting say D but the box is in N it won't move. Are there any positions you don't get a dash display? My 2003 td5 auto recently had this problem but only in R, drove fine in al the other gears.

Have checked all electrics - selector input is fine to gear box - cable etc fine - am assuming i am now into torque converter or gear box replacement! sh-te!

Hi Zak, before you start to self-destruct, have you checked the fluid level in the autobox? If there is insufficient fluid you will get no drive.

There is a specific procedure to follow when checking the level:

1. Starting with a cold engine, handbrake on, transfer box in neutral - start the engine.

2. Now cycle through each gear position, leaving it for 2 seconds before moving onto the next position. Once you've gone from P to 1, go back to P and whilst the engine is still running, get underneath to check the level.

3. The 'level/fill' plug is on the front face of the auto box, it's usually a T50 Torx bit. Get a catch tank ready just in case, then remove the plug. There should be a small weep of oil at this stage. If there is no oil coming out top up with Dexron III atf until a bead of oil weeps out, then replace the level/plug.

4. With the gearbox in P, now put the transfer box in high and check for gear selection.

If it was a low fluid problem and you have topped it right up again, you should have drive.

GOOD LUCK

Dave
