Difficulty selecting gears

I have a 1989 300tdi defender 90 and am struggling to select gears, particularly 1st and 2nd. I don't know when it's fluids were last changed. Could it be the result of old oil or is it more likely to be something bigger?
 
in what way are they difficult to select , very stiff or grates, can you select reverse,, 3rd 4th and 5th with vehicle stood engine running

Yes can select all gears when standing and running but can only select 2nd if I pull down and to the left. Can sometimes select 1st but most of the time it feels like something is blocking the 1st gear and the gear stick either slides itself into reverse or 3rd.
 
if you look at the drivers side front of the gear box top you can see reverse plunger its bolted on with bolts ,strip and clean it re grease and it can be shimmed to give a good first gear position
 
Is your biting point getting very low (lazy clutch slave)? Try giving the clutch a few pumps in neutral while changing, a bit like double de-clutching but with out the revving part.

May also just be a bit of subtle wrist action needed to get into those gears rather than going straight in.

thats above the yoke stick sits in has to push the plunger in against the spring to move over to select reverse, to select first yoke should just rest against the plunger, if plunger is in the wrong position you wont be able to easly just push stick forward for first or back for second

Biting point is ok but its a theory. Wouldn't a lazy clutch make all the gears hard to select though, not just 1st & 2nd?

Logically, yes but by the time you get up to 3rd/4th/5th you've already pumped the clutch a few times in a short period of time. Try it when you're pulling up to a roundabout or junction etc. and see if it goes into 2nd or 1st easier.
