difficult to find gears

Hi,having owned and driven my first discovery TD5 for two weeks now (1998) i sometimes find it very difficult to get from second gear to third,and extremely difficult to drop down from fifth to fourth,does anyone else have this problem or is there something dodgy with the gearbox/clutch.
 
Probably your gear lever bias plate has snapped feller, dead easy to fix and about a fiver for a new one. When stationary, does your gear lever flap around everywhere in nutral, instead of just going side to side?

Where does your gearlever rest? Between first and second? or between third and fourth?

If it's between 1st and second, your bias plate has bust - £5 for a new one and about 30-40mins to fit.
 
Hi Thebiglad,Dizco,everyone,thanks for your help,yes my gearstick seems to rest betweem 1st& 2nd gears,so now i need to replace the biasplate,so how i do go about it,is it a genuine landrover part.:confused:John.

It's very common problem so you'll find a replacement just about anywhere, but from an LR dealer they are only a £5.

To get access you need to remove the centre console, only about 8 screws and easier than it looks, then remove the sound barrier and rubber membrane and you now have access to the top of the gearbox.

The bias plate is under the square-ish ally box at the bottom of the lever shaft.
 
Hi everyone and thanks for all the good advice, sorry so long to reply been busy,yes it was the bios plate that was knacked also a spring,working a treat now,cheers.....
