ive bin driving it regular and have noticed that its getting more difficult to select first gear is this a big problem to sort out or not i have checked gear box oil recently hoping it s a cheap and easy fix please advise options

in what way is it hard to get into first

do yer keep hitting reverse or cant find the gate for first

if the answer is yes its the return spring on a little flap under the transmission tunnel at the bottom of the gearstick ( itll be on the drivers side of the little box thingy ) just needs a new spring to hold that flap tight down :D:D

pennies to replace and do and shouldnt take more than 1 hour with 3 brews and 10 cigs :D:D:D

mine takes a while to start and kicks out a load of ****e most times but i love it , but they do drive you mad when theys start feckin about

me mad ....well im just mad anyway .....it just drives me to despair and back again when it sees ive got a bit of cash it decides to want another bloody heckspensive part or hoperation doing on it :cool:

had the fooker 8 months now and done 0.7 miles at a cost of over £300 on the engine alone  fook knows why i do it :boink:

just had a gearbox apart for the first time and i found the first gear selector was badly worn and i dont think pushing the gear home, anything with gearboxes is nasty..

is it ? forks wear but dont hold gear in gear dog teeth and detent springs in synchro hub do that are they worn , excessive endfloat on gears will allow gear to jump out anything above 4 thou

What James said. It's likely incorrect spacings or an issue with the baulk ring/selector hub for 1st/2nd.
All the parts are readily available but good quality parts are a a bit more expensive, though worth it in the end.
Easy enough to sort out all the clearances are set by the lengths of the bushes, to alter them you just face them down on emery paper, and check using feeler gauges. Instructions are in the workshop manual and are easy to follow.

Worth looking at the stop gate though - mine was rusted right through and 1st was a total pig. Made a new one out of a door hinge and it works a treat.

Hello what is the spring called you were talking about as I’m having the same problem thanks

Thanks, it’s very easy to engage reverse when trying to go into first gear
either springs need replacing or the plate angle needs adjusting, to fit the springs, wind the adjusting screw nearly out lever/bend the bottom spring location forward you can lever it back after youve fitted the springs, adjust the plate so you cant select first but also rev with just enough pressure you dont select it accidentally but still can without popeye arms

That’s great thanks, il sort that over the weekend. The part number for that spring says for the series 3, will it do the 89 defender

no totally different gear box on the rhs side of gearbox top below the stick turret is this, held on with 2 8mm bolts 13mm spanner size, might need cleaning or springs replacing
