 Hi

I have a 96 Disco v8i with 155k on clock.

About 5,000 miles ago I noticed a droning noise intermittently at rear driver side of vehicle whilst driving. I was told by a Landy dealer that it might be the rear diff.

Recently the noise has been getting more frequent and seems to vary pitch and frequency on bends and cornering.

Yesterday, I noticed slight vibration and louder droning noise at rear when driving and accellerating.

The noise is not there when coasting or decellerating...but only on accellerating or putting the transmission/drive under load. Crusing does not seem to cause it.

Could this be the ned of my diff? Or should I be looking at something else.

Any ideas of what costs I might be looking at to rectify?

Cheers

The best way to find out is to put it on a wheels free four post ramp and listen to each bit with a stethoscope, you will find out in seconds where the noise is coming from.

Take out both rear halfshafts to rule out wheel bearing first. I had a similar noise and was convinced it was the diff .. Turned out to be a bearing on the brink of disintegration.

Jack up, stick rear on axle stands. Take out half shafts and spin the wheels hard to see if the bearings are shot.

Hope this helps

Many thaks Gents

Looks like is a bit of everything...

The rubber 'thingy' between driveshaft and rear diff was shot.....

Looks like wheel bearing might also be on way out.

I'm getting there....

Thanks for the help and info..itssaved me a lot of time.

Cheers

Dave:)

If your diff donut is shot.. then fit an older (200TDI) style diff flange and a UJ to UJ rear prop instead of the donut type. This will last alot longer if UJs are servicable and regulary greased. I have to do this on mine cos of the lift i have. It likes to eat donut's.

Glad to be of help
