Differential 2.8:1

I need to reduce engine rpm for motorway cruising, engine will be upgraded to 4.0 litre. The standard diff is 3.54 so not to much of a change

Won't 2.8:1 gearing sort of cancel out the extra HP and torque offered by the 4.0 though?
 
no it will like it,assuming you can get it to move from standstill without burning out the clutch..(ie on steep hill)

It'll just be gutless I'd have thought, or at least no where near as nice or peppy.

My RV8 (TR7) runs a 3.9:1 axle and a LT-77. I admit it's no motorway cruiser, but it's rather good fun.
