Hia all,
This is my first post so please be gentle with me! haha

Right i am looking at buying a 2.5 tdi discovery, a pre 1994 disco is over twice the price of a 1994-1995 for me to insure.
Has anyone got any ideas to why this is because it has got me a bit puzzled!
Oh and by the way is there anything i really need to look for when buying one?
I am going to look at two tomorrow morning so hopefuly one of them will be a "good un!"

Thanks in advance!
Matt

If you are going to look at 2 tomorrow morning and dont know what to look for, I sugest canceling it and look another day or spend the whole night reading the forum...

there's loads of stuff, from rust to bushes to steering...

to get you going...

lift the rear carpet and check if the rear floor is actually there or has rusted.
top of rear wheel arches, usually rust and water starts to get in...
sills..they rust, even more if it has side steps fitted as it traps the water...
floorpans, guess what...? rust!
check for oily/greasy steering box drop arm.... might be leaking and you might need one.
Swivel balls....check if they'r leaking
gearbox...check if all engages properly (hi, lows and diff lock)
gearbox....have a drive and make sure all gears happears to be fine, Discos are prone to start to get crunchy changing to second...

errm....there's more though

Yeah i have looked at 3 or 4 already but they havnt really been what im looking for.
looked at one that the pillar between the two doors had pretty much corroded through, very scary!
I do have some idea about them, i know they have rust issues and stuff.
Is there any huge advantage between having a 300tdi over a 200tdi? and what kind of mileage would you say that they would do if they have been looked after, doing road miles and properly serviced ect before they need major engine work?
Any ideas about the wierd insurance quotes as thats my main issue at the moment.
cheers again!
Matt

Insurance, no idea why there should be such a difference, ask the insurers.

I hate to see people buying cars and being lumbered. I strongly recommend that you find someone that has a good knowledge of discovery's and take them with you to look at possible purchases.
There's a lot of nice looking disco's for sale that are absolute sheds, especially the years you are looking at.

Best of luck, I hope you get a good one.

Nice to see that this is a friendly and helpful forum!
Yeah i dont know anyone with disco experiance but im reasnably good with cars and feel pretty comfortable with what i am looking at, cant wait to get one now and have looked at a few that WERE real wrecks so i think that helped me to see some problem spots on them first hand!

cheers

how much you looking to pay for one ? and how much would you pay for a sound 300tdi ? i have one available some time later this year. 300tdi 1996 in pearlecent red

it will have had all rot cut back and fully welded including new arches, boot floor, both inner and outer sills, perfect gearbox, overhauled turbo, new vacume pump, engine is bang on, loads of new parts and i might stick a new cambelt kit on it.

Hia that sounds outa my budget really!
Am after one around the £1,000 to £1,500 so i know one for that kinda money isnt gunna be a minter.
but as long as it is reasnably solid and runs ok i dont mind, as i can do most of the work myself and most parts seem reasnably cheap!
welding and stuff isnt really a issue as long as it doesnt need loads!
cheers

Try confused.com or similar sites & see what they quote even just for info, you might find it's just your one insurer that has this quirk.

i had a 1995 300tdi, but now have a 1992 200tdi im with Lancaster insurance and the 200 tdi cost £51 a year more to insure then the 300tdi. i was told when i asked that its cos of lack of safety and it sill only cost me £41.67 a month fully comp,

am allso on the north west 4x4 fourm and found this just after i got my insurance. its in the 4x4 public chat bit, iv copyed this for u to read.

I've been in touch with Adrian Flux insurance and managed to get insurance discount for all members of northwest4x4, if you need an email off myself with confirmation of your account details on here for proof of membership then just let me know and I'll sort it with pleasure, if you still have your original email from when you joined up then you'll be fine with that I'd imagine.

Here's the details:

Dear Steve,

Many thanks for your enquiry to this office with regard to Adrian Flux Insurance Services becoming the insurance provider for members of the North West 4x4 Club that you run.

I have had a quick look at the website and liked the format and can confirm we would like to provide your members with discounted, competitive 4x4 insurance cover.

We are able to cover all 4x4's - ex-MOD, Classic Land Rover's, Grey-Imports, Q-Plates, young drivers and convicted drivers. All of our policies cover Green Laning, which we understand as being an integral part of a 4x4 owners'
policy.

We will willingly give your members a Club discount with the Insurance Companies who underwrite our policies.

This can be up to 15% but generally will be between 5 to 10%.

Also we will give you and your members free legal expenses cover - up to £50K worth of fees in the event of a non-fault accident.

So there you have it, the rest of the details and a link are on the Links Page, they seen really flexible and can offer limited mileage policys for 2nd vehicles etc so tell them what you need and see if they can save you some money.
