diff lock ligh constantly on??? what this about?
a few weeks ago if a played around with the low range box it would go out but then come back on a few seconds later.
am presuming an earth or somthing stupid like that.
also while am here is ther a specific rout you you on the H block to seleck the drive you want?
i usually take mine into neutral left and then up into lowrange diff lock from high range open diff if you get me? but i know you can go strait up from high range open diff strait up into lowrange open diff and then left into diff lock, cant seem to find anything on this???
also i have heard or way to test if the diff lock is working like jacking one wheel up and spinning it if it turns its in open if it dont its in lock???
just curiouse cause at times when i have been stuck i ahve had just one wheel spinning in the mud or 2 on one side, now to me thats an open diff or to get all 4 wheels in locked diff are we talking about gettin an air locker diff or somthing to get it that locked that 1 wheel per axle wont spin wihout the oppsite wheel spinning aswell.
sorry to drone on and i think i have explained as best i can about my situation.

right, a diferential works on the principal that it finds the easiest out, if you know what i mean. what your diff lock does is makes the axle into a solid live combination, ie no diferential. so when the diff lock is engaged then both wheels turn at the same speed at the same time therefore there is no easy out for the diff, are you keeping up. your difflock works only on your back axle, to work on both axles you would also need a cross lock, ive never seen one for a landy but a lot of hgv's have these. now, what air lockers do is lock the differential solid, you can fit these on both axles but you will need a switch inside the cockpit to operate them. they are very expensive but very efficient, if you want info on air lockers you are better off talking to an extreme off roader. if your difflock light is on then you have a problem. dont run around like this just thinking to yourself its just a bad earth, it could be that your difflock is engaged therefore you will **** the 'box if you keep using it. try reversing for 20 yards or so, as you may have just wound the diff up. hope this helps ;)
 
cheers YD, i know about diffs and air lockers and that i.e how they work etc, but wouldnt i notice it it was in diff lock on normal driving round? the tyres would be chiping like fook on a lock or tight bend wouldnt they?
basically what i am saying is that take the rear axle for example, when i have it engaged in diff lock i ave had only one wheel spinning on the axle, you with me? thus meaning i wont have a any lock? am i right? also what sould the diff ratio be on a standard 200tdi disco? are they all the same or might it have had a diff changed at some point before i owned it? also can you tell me exactly how you engage your low range diff lock on the low range stick? god i sound stupid hear but it doesnt hurt to get second opinions.

also just to add since yesterday i am getting a vibration when accelerating now, nothing harsh but noticably different, any clues what this could be? poss drive shaft???? bearing of some sort???? at the same time i get a sqeeking noise like a supesion sqeek now that also occurs with the vibration but the squeek is comming from somthing rotaional and is not the brakes.

god its doing my head in now and it aint the weather to be ****ing round in now either.

oh and as far as i am aware the diff light has been on for some years now. i have had it roughly 3 months and done nearly 10k on it.
 
RAZ yer better off refering to it as a CENTER diff lock, it dont lock the diffs in yer front and rear axles. So its right when the center diff lock is on, you can still have one wheel on each axle spinning free while the other dose nowt until the spinnin one finds some traction and the diff in the axle transfers the the drive to the stationary wheel.

Oh! and you can engage the center diff by moving the stick left or right (under 8 mph) there aint any sequence to it, high or low box;)
like yella says try driving it backwards for a bit , it usually dis-engages it

the squeek is probly prop joints
 
but any clues on the vibration, and the squeeking stops when i dip the clutch,
only got under and greased all the nipples about a month or so ago but now i am noticing wet patches on the prob shafts and diffs, gonna grease em again tomoz and check diff oil levels etc, only thing is my gease gun cant pack that much pressure on at the mo i need to pick a new one up.
 
Well while yer under there wi yer grease gun, give the props a wobble by hand, see if theres any slap in the bearings, I'll put money on it that there on the way out.;)
And dont ferget yer WD40 to free up the diff lock mechanism:rolleyes:
 
yes i do have play in the props, this means bearing on way out? how much they and whats the job like to do?

oh you ever known them to sieze?
have had a shaft explode and spin a rangie over at 85 before, think this is another possibility as am a motorway driver and dont like the feel of whgat could happen.
 
Ther about £12.00- £15.00 for patterned ones (but get good quality ones);)
There straight forward to do, circlips off, press out the old ones , usin a vice and socket, and new ones in the same way:cool:
I aint heard of em seizing but like you say they have a nasty habit of lettin go when you least expect, and if its the forward facing one that goes,:eek: :eek: say no more.

If yours have got the the squeekin stage then they aint far of lettin go
 
**** lol gonna be a week before i can get them providing they aint on back order, when i say play in the props i mean i can turn them not up and down or side to side play they will actually turn back and forth slightly, this a worn transferre box prob?
 
yer i would try it now but i hate reversing now the windows are tinted you cant see a fooking thing.
shal i give it some biffters reversing it or do it slowly or shurly?
 
i use a pry bar in the uj,s to check for any play. they do usually make a hellova racket before letting go though.

ive heard of em letting go at high speed, (forward facing too), dont fancy it myself!
i can only think the owners must be feckin deaf.

Dint give any warnin when the front one went on my Disco!!! apart from it squeeked now and agen.
80 mph overtakin an artic outside lane, just eased off the gas, made a funny noise, BANG,! yer bastard..

front prop. diff end.. battered the floor to buggery. luckly it dint dig int the road.. never did find the the UJ end.. well no-one stopped to say it went thro there window:eek:

not worth takin the chance with em.. any noise..CHANGE EM!!;)
 
it probably flew past your ear, but you never heard it!

found it today, its the forward facing bearing comming out from the transfere box.
so.......just undo the bolts on the prop at the box end, remove old bearing, grease new one up place it in and attach the prop back up?
need it for tuesday so hope this weather warms up like it says it gonna, cheers lads!
 
hiya guys, am underneath the car as we speak, i have dropped the propshaft to change the bearing in the transfere box that sits behind the shaft, after dropping the shaft i have resleased the 30mm nut and removed the flange, but here's where am stuck, i cant remove the seal the get at the bearing, am gonna post a pic up in a min to show you the stage where am at, any clues on how to remove the bearing, i have tried prising it away but it wont budge,
cheers chaps any help would be gratefull.
