Diesel 'missing'

My 2.25 diesel seems to 'miss' when idling every 5 seconds or so.

The injectors have been overhauled and the lift pump is new.

A friend thinks it's timing, but I don't have the special tools for the scientific method.

Is there a 'bloke in his shed' method of setting the timing.

(sorry if this has been asked before)

losen off the injector pump and the pipes then rotate the pump to see it it makes a difference

its not uncommon,does it go away if you raise tick over a little,wouldnt worry about it if runs okay

yeah, pretty much.

Regarding the timing tool. Might be a silly question, but why need it? If you turn the engine in the normal direction, then the timing chain will be 'tight' and the cam will be in the right position for adjusting the pump.

Is that right, or has my missus fed me some more stuppid for tea again.

what timing tool ,there is a tool for setting pointers for pump timing and skew gear position it also shows whether cam timinig is exact ,do you want to go that far unless you have other symptoms or is really pronounced its not uncommon at tick over , poor timing would show up with excess smoke and sluggishness if retarded ,crisp and diesel knock if too far advanced i dont think its timing,unless you can give other symtoms and if running well dont distrub

OK, James, I reckon I should leave it alone.

A new battery and injector tips (plus a new lift pump) gets her started very easily now. Even without glow plugs.

Before this was done, there was a bit of a 'miss'. Tak tak tak tak, putt. Or similar.

Just thought it would've gone with all the blood, sweat and tears she's had.

(That reminds me, I still don't have a name for her)

I wouldn't worry about it, mine does exactly the same, but runs as sweet as a nut. If Mr James says it's ok, thats good enough for me
