Diesel Hot Starting Fault P38

Are there any Beemers or Ou-Piels out there with the 2.5 diesel? You might pick up a reasonable FIP from one of them and be able to replace the top electronics with yours.

Fancy kit needed to change them over but Wammers will help out so long as you confirm that you have not the slightest hint of being swarthy. He has views on this matter.

Otherwise it looks like R10,000 and a UK friend to bring it out as hand baggage.

Yes, lots... Will discuss it with Roverland next time car is in for service...ha ha, LR courier route well-established between London and Cape Town...or maybe I 'll just park the car up until winter....works fine in the cold...

Any chance someone can email me the wiring diagrams my 1999 dse is becoming hard to start when hot and the links for the diagrams don't exist no more :( [email protected]

Might have been better asking someone to PM you a link rather than sticking your Email address up. http://www.landroverresource.com/ Don't click on anything other than the blue text next to the red large file warning.

Hi All. Sorry for resurrecting an old thread.

I am new here, been trolling the collective wisdom here for past 2 years since I bought a P38 2.5 DSE. I learnt a lot here, thanks everyone.
I have not had any major problem with it till recently. It's hard to start when hot. I am from a Malaysia, it's hot most of the time.
For the last couple of months, I have been going back and forth to the workshop, but still fail to resolve the issue. I need to do 3-4 cycle of crank, stop, crank, stop, crank stop before it can start.

Need the collective help here.

Here's what I have done so far.
  1. Relocate the sensor to cheat it into turning on Glow Plug every time starting the engine
  2. Changed Battery
  3. Serviced the Starter
  4. Serviced the FIP
  5. Replaced the Glow Plugs
  6. Checked In-Tank Fuel pump - mechanic says OK, good amount pumped
  7. Serviced the Injector
I just ordered the Hot Start Fix off eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/201241772674?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT)

I still need to do 3-4 cycle of cranks before it starts. Is there anything else I missed? My mechanic and I are puzzled?

Thanks.

Check injection pump static timing is correct. Check for low compressions.

Thanks all. I will take it back to the workshop today and see what can be done from the words of wisdom here.

Two questions:
1. How do you test for kow compression on a diesel engine?
2. Weak earth - that's the first time I read about this. I would appreciate if you can explain more. Thanks.

Compression. You need a compression tester. Fits where the glow plugs go. Checked mine while I had the inlet manifold off so not sure if it can be done in situ. Some people on here seem to manage feats that make a contortionist look like a fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva sufferer.

Weak earth. The early diesels had a map in the EMS that was pretty hopeful for an older vehicle. One of the parameters was engine speed. Unless the rpm was above a certain level it wouldn't let the car start. If the earth connections are not clean then the starter might turn over slower and the car will not start. I assume that is what @N2O is thinking?

What age is yours? The 99 onwards diesels don't suffer the hot-start issues as badly as far as I know. Wammers will know better though.

Later models 1999 and on have lift pump on cranking which helps with hot start. Earlier models only had lift pump with glows or when running.;)

I received the Diesel Hot Start Fix from ebay and installed it to no success. I noticed the Glow Plug indicator turns on for a little less than 6 seconds in the morning and when hot it stayed on for just above 2 second. Does this mean the relay is bad? Where is it? Thanks in advance.

The glow plug relay is switched on and off by the ECU subject to temperature readings from the ECU temp sensor. The amount of time the glows are on depends on engine temperature. The hot start tricks the ECU into thinking the engine is cold. Relay is in the ECU box to rear of battery. In your part of the world 6 seconds from cold sounds about right, but 2 seconds with the hot start is not long enough. I suggest the hot start is duff.
